College Students Create Simoncelli Tribute
Mini-MotoGP Motorcycle honors the late Marco Simoncelli
Gateshead College (UK) automotive students have been displaying the racier side to their talents in completing the latest engineering project.
The Level 2 and Level 3 students at the college’s Skills Academy for Automotive, Engineering, Manufacturing and Logistics on the Team Valley have created a mini MotoGP motorcycle in honor of racer Marco Simoncelli.
The 24-year-old Italian was predicted by many to be a future MotoGP world champion before being killed at the Malaysian Grand Prix in Sepang last October.
The mini replica of his machine is now on display in reception at the Academy to showcase the expertise and motivation of the students.
The idea for the project came from the students themselves following the news of Simoncelli’s early death.
Sarah Louise Gray (Gateshead College Student) says: “We wanted to do something very special to honour Marco, who was not only a great talent but a very popular racer.
“After careful thought, we felt that this was the best way to do that. So working from some internet images, we first stripped the bike down before carefully rebuilding and repainting it.
“We are very proud of what we’ve achieved and hope that it’s a fitting way to celebrate his life and achievements.”
Robin King (Lecturer at the Academy) says: “This is an impressive piece of work, which required the students to show an extremely high skill level to complete a highly technical and complex project and the results are outstanding.
“They have used all the skills learnt at the Academy to ensure every little detail and graphic of Marco’s bike has been faithfully recreated.”
Those involved were L2 Motorcycle Service and Repair Students Sarah Louise Gray, Jason Doran, Ciaran Donnelly, Liam Flannigan, Ross Reay, Andrew Davison and Rachel Jones, and Adam Smith, Shane Knots and Paul Greaves, who are studying L3 Body and Paint.
The Skills Academy for Automotive, Engineering, Manufacturing and Logistics features top of the range equipment including state-of-the-art driving simulators, MOT testing equipment, a rolling road, specialist diagnostic equipment, spray booths and a dedicated welding workshop.
