Olight is a Chinese company that is a global “illumination tools” company, specializing in all forms of lighting for everyday use, tactical weapons-mounted illumination, headlamps, electric lanterns, and even portable power stations. They are mostly known for their unique ‘flat’ flashlights and laser devices called Arkfeld, a favorite product globally for Law Enforcement and military use. Editor Don Williams reviewed Olight’s ArkPro Ultra flashlight this summer. What sets Olight apart from every other flashlight company is the use of unique materials and the unique approach to miniature design.
This year, Olight introduced the new Oclip 2 Series line of miniature portable clip-on/magnetic mount lighting solutions. The Oclip 2 Series comes in four versions: Pro, Pro Premium, Ultra, and Ultra Premium. I tested the latter, which is the flagship of the line.
The Pro line is made from standard aluminum. The Ultra line is made of a proprietary ultra-hard material Olight calls OAL aluminum, which is nearly twice as hard as the 6061 aluminum commonly used in aircraft parts throughout the world. That’s some seriously tough stuff.
All Oclip flashlights use multiple methods of magnetic mounting/holding, and all are IP66 rated for high-pressure water exposure. It is not an underwater flashlight, which requires an IP68 rating. At 2.8 ounces for the light, and about 2.2 additional ounces for the optional charging base, these are seriously small and lightweight performers.
Also common to all Olight Oclip 2 Series flashlights is the unique tilting head design. Combined with the tiny size, the rotatable mounting clip, and the multiple magnetic points, you can get into difficult areas and use the light hands-free.
Pro, Ultra, and Premium
Olight Pro is the standard line, with 10 lighting modes, including red-light modes. The Ultra line adds UV light for a dozen modes, a much harder OAL build material, and the unique OclipBeat feature, a small multicolor light that glows when you flip the head up. More on this later.
The Premium version of each model adds the unique charging base, which is not needed to charge the actual light. It doubles the runtime and provides an alternate way to charge the flashlight itself.
You can keep the base always attached (magnetically) to the flashlight for maximum illumination time. The light alone runs about an hour at the brightest 580-lumen setting and up to 144 hours at the lowest one-lumen Moonlight setting. The base doubles that. With the light and base connected, it is still an extremely small and light package that I never found a reason to separate.
If you like, you can keep the base separate and use it as a backup battery. When the flashlight battery becomes low, you can reintroduce it to the base for recharging.
Learning the Controls
At first, the Olight Oclip 2 Series line and its features seem oddly complicated. It took me a few minutes to wrap my head around why these tiny little flashlights are so cool and so different, and how they have so much going on with performance and features.
The lights operate quickly and easily using a few tricky motions: a quick tap of the side button for on and off, a long tap for changing illumination levels, and a three-position rotary switch for changing lighting focus and color: flood, spot, and red/UV.
Please note that Turbo, the highest lighting level, is bright. Do not look into the light when using it! The Moonlight level is the lowest at only one lumen, so it is designed for stealthy near-field illumination. Unless it is pitch-black dark, you won’t notice it being on.
The light beam options are Spot, Pure Flood, Red Light, and UV Light. The Spot is a tightly focused spot, and the Flood is expansively wide.
Oclip 2 Ultra Premium in the Shop
Okay, so how did the lights work for me? I used the Olight Oclip 2 Ultra Premium in multiple situations where holding a flashlight or using a headlamp was suddenly eclipsed by the introduction of the Oclip. I mostly used a combination of another headlamp and the Oclip light to get maximum illumination in very dark or very difficult-to-reach areas for motorcycle repair and maintenance, or working with electronics at my custom loudspeaker company for audiophiles, Forma Sound.
Using the Oclip magnet while working on a motorcycle is a no-brainer. The magnets are strong and hold the light in place. The tilting head allows me to get the light where I need it almost every time.
If there’s no metal to stick to, the unique rotating clip mount is used. The clip rotates, the head tilts, and the whole package, even with the charging base, is so small I was able to get light to shine on a nut I normally could not both see and reach with my tools at the same time with my headlamp. Very cool.
A Light That Keeps Count
I can’t finish this review without mentioning OclipBeat, a small multicolor light exclusive to the Ultra. Yes, the flashlight comes with a built-in Burning Man-style light show that is intuitive and automatic. Flip the light head all the way up, and OclipBeat breathes for about 15 seconds in a color that shows how many hours you’ve run the light. New colors unlock as the hours add up, and the full range takes roughly 250 hours. Only then does the system allow you to override the automatic function and toggle to a specific color of your liking. It’s not for illumination; it’s a running record of how much you’ve used the light. It is very unique.
Is the Oclip 2 Ultra Premium Worth $95?
So why should you be interested in the Olight Oclip 2 Ultra Premium, and others in the range of flashlights? It covers a wide range of uses, from camping and hunting to mechanic-ing, or just plain safety. The flashlight is small and light, and has a long battery life despite being blazingly bright. It feels solid in your hand, and is extremely durable. It’s easy to use, and easy to grab and move around without accidentally changing modes. And did I mention it’s small? Even with the steep $95 price tag, this is a flashlight I highly recommend.
