Joe Rocket Ion Mesh Motorcycle Jacket Review: A Brand Reunited

As Joe Rocket was approaching its 35th anniversary, it looked like the popular motorcycle apparel brand from Canada was on the ropes in the United States. The website showed a dwindling selection of gear, and much of the stock was stale and on sale. Fortunately for consumers, the United States version of Joe Rocket has reunited with Joe Rocket Canada after roughly two decades of estrangement. It’s summertime, so I grabbed the all-new Joe Rocket Ion mesh jacket for a review. Don’t confuse it with the old Joe Rocket Phoenix Ion jacket, which was a totally different product.

The initial good news is that the Joe Rocket Ion mesh jacket is high quality. While it doesn’t have the garment-level European certification we like to see, Joe Rocket has a good reputation with us. Importantly, Joe Rocket shows its dedication to protecting the rider by including a CE Level 2 back protector and CE Level 1 protection for your elbows and shoulders. That’s impressive for a jacket with a $160 MSRP.

The shell of the Ion is a mixture of mesh and higher-durability Rock Tex 600 panels in high-abrasion areas; Rock Tex 600 is Joe Rocket’s own 600-denier textile. There are also two types of mesh, with Joe Rocket’s in-house standard Free-Air mesh in the chest and back area, while the more open Free-Air Plus mesh brings air to the sides of the body and inside the arms, where the flow isn’t as strong.

The combination of materials gives the Joe Rocket Ion jacket a good feel. Instead of formless sheets of mesh, which flow air at the expense of fit, the mixture of firmness gives the Ion a framing for your body. This also helps the jacket look good on you.

The fit is generous. I wear a Large, and this is loose-fitting, even with the armor installed. If you’re an airbag wearer, it’s perfect. If not, you won’t feel the need to remove Joe Rocket’s Vault Web body armor, as it is extremely flexible, unobtrusive, and flows plenty of air.

The Ion jacket has three adjustability zones. The cuffs have a hook-and-loop flap, the waist has hook-and-loop straps, and the upper sleeves have three-position snaps. Together, they help keep the sleeve from rotating and the elbow armor where it belongs. There are also two loops for attaching the jacket to riding pants for extra safety. In the front, a single zipper closes the jacket, and there’s no adjustability for the collar, not that you would need it.

I put the mesh to a midday torture test in the San Fernando Valley, where I traversed it using 17 miles of surface streets. Temperatures were in the 100s in the shade, and I was riding in the blazing sun on 140-degree pavement. Even at city street speeds, the mesh array flowed plenty of air, albeit hot air, across my body. I was wearing a mesh workout shirt, so I had a direct sense of how much air was flowing, and it was plenty.

Night rides that dropped into the 70s were still comfortable with the Ion and a lightweight cotton T-shirt. The ability for the Ion to handle a 30-degree swing with no airflow adjustability is impressive.

Joe Rocket gave the Ion jacket plenty of storage space, with some surprises. You get two zippered waist pockets outside, as usual. Inside, there are dual zippered Napoleon pockets, and the right one has a clip for keys. The cargo pocket doesn’t have any closure, so I wouldn’t put anything in it that I wasn’t willing to lose. Hiding behind the cargo pocket is a slot for carrying an extra faceshield. I might not have figured that out if it didn’t have a tiny icon alerting me. Great job!

Joe Rocket is off to a great start with the new Ion mesh jacket. It flows air effectively and offers a full array of armor for an attractive $160 MSRP. You get six colorways to choose from, and we liked the sophisticated look of the Navy/Black/Red option. I have worn a dozen Joe Rocket jackets over the years, easily, so I like seeing the brand back in good hands.
