2015 Dakar Rally Stage 3 Motorcycle Results

Not since Heinz Kinigadner in the 1990s has an Austrian competed in the Dakar Rally. But at the 37th edition, this changed with the arrival of Matthias Walkner, a former MX3 World Champion. And as one would expect, Walkner would compete on Austrian machinery, the KTM support rider piloting a 450 Rally.

The rookie began 2015 Dakar Rally held in South America with stellar results, finishing eighth in stage one and sixth in stage two. And on Friday, Walkner did something few rookies ever do – he won a stage.

Walkner was the dominate rider in stage 3, which took riders 408 miles from San Juan to Chilecito, Argentina, including a 137-mile special. This special was short compared to Monday’s grueling 388-mile special, and took riders northwards along the line of the Andes. Riders were forced to negotiate through red earth tracks and canyons, and spent much of their time in extremely rocky riverbeds.

Walker finished the stage in 2 hours, 34 minutes and 28 seconds – just 40 seconds ahead of four-time Dakar Rally winner Marc Coma on the factory Red Bull KTM. Finishing third was stage-two winner and current overall leader Joan Barreda Bort on the Team HRC Honda CRF450 Rally.

KTM reports that race officials shortened Tuesday’s stage in response to Monday’s stage two that was just by “even seasoned professionals as ‘difficult.’”

It’s all about focus for the rookie Walkner: “I already had a good feeling when I got to the finish because I knew I had a good day. But at the end I was a bit tired and wasn’t concentrating so well and I made some small mistakes. It is an amazing feeling to win the stage and for sure I didn’t expect this. It will be difficult to open the piste tomorrow. Now for the rest of the rally I just want to enjoy every kilometer, to learn and to stay focused on the road book so I don’t make many mistakes.”

The reigning Dakar Champion Coma was quick today, but saved much energy for stage four, which enters the never-ending sand dunes of the Atacama Desert in Chile.

“Today was not a long stage and I thought it would be a good day to recover some time. But in the end that is quite difficult to do if the distance is short. Tomorrow the skyline of the rally completely changes. We arrive in the open desert and the sand dunes where I feel more comfortable. Everything is possible,” Coma says.

As for Barreda, he rode to a comfortable third place, not wanting to push it too hard early in the rally. He now has a a 5:33-minute lead over fellow Honda rider Paolo Conclaves, who finished fifth in stage three.

“Today was easier than yesterday, but anyway, it was really dangerous because we were on river beds and a lot of stones all day and so many broken up tracks. So that was sometimes dangerous and you always need to take care. I felt really good all day opening the track, it was a good feeling. I’m really happy, it’s one day more done,” Barreda Bort says.

“Now we go to Chile and there will be different stages and a different feeling so we will see there. The advantage is really small, it’s nothing different. We need to remain focused on our planning, so nothing is different, we’ll continue like this.”

Finishing fourth – a mere 0.04 of a second ahead of Goncavles – was the Australian Toby Price, another KTM-supported rookie in 2015 Dakar. Sherco’s Alain Duclos finished sixth, the top French rider. His fellow countrymen – Michael Metge and Olivier Pain, both on Yamahas – finished 16th and 21st, respectively.

Rounding out the top 10 in stage three were KTM’s Ruben Faria, Honda’s Israel Esquerre, KTM’s Jordi Viladoms and Yamaha’s Pedero Garcia.

The leading female rider – Laia Sanz Pla-Giribert of Spain finished 17th aboard her Honda CRF 450 Rally.

The terrain drastically changes from rock to sand dunes during Wednesday’s stage four, which takes riders from Chilecito, Argentina, to Copiapo, Chile, for 565 miles, including a 196-mile special.
