2011 World Superbike Crash Video

One of the most unusual images of 2011 World Superbike Championship at Donington Park was when Supersonic Ducati rider Maxime Berger lost the rear wheel on the 1198R.

The accident quickly became the talk of Race 1 at Donington Superbike. The Berger incident was discussed by Eurosport’s studio team of Tony Carter, Carl Fogarty, Neil Hodgson and James Haydon, which is shown in this YouTube video.

The video proves the popularity of the Donington Berger incident; it has close to 300,000 views.

During the actual wreck, the rear wheel on Berger’s Ducati suddenly fell off at Goddards on Lap 6, causing the Frenchman to crash. In Race 2, Berger had clutch issues on the Ducati, causing another DNF.

Maxime Berger (Supersonic Ducati Superbike) says: “I’m disappointed and incredulous. I’ve never had to stop twice for two such strange reasons. The rim broke and I was lucky because it broke in a slow corner. I found myself on the ground without knowing what happened. In race two after the start, the clutch started to give me problems, until it completely stopped me after the first lap.

“Practice had gone well; I had a good feeling with the Ducati and a pace that would allow me to win my first championship points. But the team did a great job here at Donington and with their help I am sure the results will come in the coming races.”
