Ruben Xaus breaks leg in Portimao

It was just another unlucky day for BMW World Superbike rider Rubin Xaus. Or maybe it has just been an unlucky SBK season all year long. During the final 2009 World Superbike race weekend of the season at Portimao, Carlos Checa’s Honda blew up in front of Rubin Xaus.

The incident covered the front of Rubin’s S 1000 RR BMW with oil and obviously some of it went on to the front tire. The oil on his front tire caused the crash. According to Rubin Xaus, " I am happy that the crash wasn’t my fault, but I am unhappy with the result".

BMW Motorrad Motorsport Director, Berti Hauser, had this to say; "I’m sorry about the stupid crash that caused Ruben to break his leg, but these things happen in racing and it was good to see him back in our pits chatting away to the team about how the bike is right now, instead of talking about his injury."

Berti summed up BMW’s first year in World Superbike series by saying, "This season has been hard for us all, but we knew that before the start and it is thanks to all the hard work everybody has put in that we have had so many top ten finishes. Considering that this is our first season, I think we should be happy about what we have achieved so far – and there’s much more to come, I’m sure of it."
