2027 Kawasaki Ninja 650 First Look: 9 Fast Facts; 30 Photos

Kawasaki’s middleweight sportbike has been in the lineup since it debuted in 2006 as the Ninja 650R. For 2027, the Kawasaki Ninja 650 gets an inverted Showa fork, radial-mount four-piston front brake calipers, revised shock settings, a lower seat, new dash layouts, and an optional quickshifter. The 649cc parallel twin and steel trellis frame are unchanged. Prices start at $8099 MSRP, and the 2027 Kawasaki Ninja 650 is due at dealers this month. The non-ABS Ninja 650 has been dropped from the lineup. Here is what has changed, and what has not:

  1. A 37mm Showa SFF-BP inverted fork replaces the 41mm conventional fork. SFF-BP stands for Separate Function Fork-Big Piston, which combines two Showa technologies. Kawasaki tells us the large-diameter damping piston keeps the bike composed as weight shifts forward under braking and adds stability on corner entry. Also, the suspension settings are intended to retain the Ninja 650’s light, neutral handling characteristics. Fork travel is 4.9 inches, which is the same as last year. The fork gets black top caps and a wider front fender.

  1. The rear suspension is retuned to match the new fork. The horizontal back-link layout returns, and the shock gets a lower spring rate, revised damping, and a new initial preload setting. The changes were made to improve suspension action while keeping the intended chassis attitude. Spring preload remains adjustable, and wheel travel is unchanged at 5.1 inches.

  1. Radial-mount four-piston calipers replace the axial-mount two-piston front calipers. Radial mounting stiffens the area around the front brake and sharpens the response to lever input. The front brake lever is revised, and Kawasaki chose new pads for what it describes as a firmer feel and linear stopping power. All three discs keep their previous diameter, while switching from a petal shape to round. Kawasaki also recalibrated the ABS for smoother intervention.

  1. There are changes to the ergonomics and geometry. The seat is 0.2 inches lower, dipping below 31 inches above the ground. The wheelbase is 54.9 inches, down from 55.5 inches. Ground clearance drops 0.2 inches to 4.9 inches. Rake and trail are unchanged at 24.0 degrees and 3.9 inches. Curb weight rises by 2 pounds, to 426 pounds for the 49-state model. Evaporative emissions equipment on California models adds another 2 pounds.

  1. The 4.3-inch color TFT display has a new layout with two display choices. Type 1 runs a bar-style tachometer across the top of the screen with vehicle information below; Type 2 uses a hexagonal tachometer. The background can be black or white. Brightness adjusts automatically to ambient light, with three selectable levels. Along with speed, gear position, and fuel level, the screen shows fuel consumption, remaining range, coolant temperature, battery voltage, service and oil-change reminders, and phone call and message notifications.

  1. Smartphone connectivity adds navigation and voice command. Through Kawasaki’s awkwardly named Rideology The App Motorcycle app, riders can view route information on the phone, search destinations, add waypoints, and change the order of stops. Voice command allows hands-free control of the app. However, both functions require a subscription. The app’s other functions return, including vehicle information, GPS route and ride-data logging, call and message notifications on the instrument panel, and changing some instrument settings from the phone.

  1. The 649cc parallel twin continues unchanged. The liquid-cooled, DOHC, eight-valve engine has an 83.0mm bore and 60.0mm stroke, with each cylinder fed by its own 36mm Keihin throttle body. Kawasaki claims 67 horsepower at 8000 rpm and 49 lb-ft of torque at 6700 rpm, the same as 2026. Kawasaki Traction Control (KTRC), added for 2023, returns with two rider-selectable levels of intervention.

  1. A quickshifter is available as an accessory for the first time on the Ninja 650. The old-school unit handles clutchless upshifts only and does not operate below 2500 rpm. Otherwise, the 6-speed transmission and wet multiplate clutch are untouched.

  1. Kawasaki is not charging a higher price for the upgrades. The standard 2027 Kawasaki Ninja 650 runs $100 less than the 2026 ABS version’s base price, and the special colors cost $100 more. The cheapest way to get into the new Ninja 650 is the Metallic Flat Spark Black/Metallic Carbon Gray colorway. Three other colors are available for a $200 premium. The bike is due at dealers by Halloween.
