2027 Kawasaki KLE650 First Look: 11 Fast Facts, 36 Photos

Kawasaki’s KLE adventure family is growing. Joining the KLE500 for 2027 is the KLE650, powered by a next-generation version of the 649cc parallel twin found in the Versys 650, Ninja 650, Z650, and Vulcan S. The KLE650 shares the KLE500’s recipe of a steel trellis frame and a 21-inch front wheel, leaning toward touring and technology, with traction control and cruise control standard. Two versions are coming: the KLE650 at $8799 and the better-equipped KLE650 SE at $9999. Both reach Kawasaki dealers in February 2027.

  1. The KLE650 is unrelated to the KLR650. While only one letter separates the names, the bikes share neither engine nor frame. The KLR650 is a 652cc single-cylinder dual-sport with a 5-speed transmission and a semi-double-cradle steel frame; the model line debuted in 1987. The KLE650 is a 649cc parallel twin with a 6-speed in a steel trellis frame. Their missions differ as well. The KLR is a simple, long-range machine with a 6.1-gallon tank. The KLE650 carries 4.2 gallons, and has a focus on touring capabilities. Curiously, the two bikes weigh within a few pounds of each other. Kawasaki lists the KLR650 with its dual-sport models and the KLE650 with its adventure models, and the KLR stays in the lineup for 2027, starting at $6999, with the KLR650 Adventure carrying an $8199 MSRP.
  1. The SE costs $1200 more and comes much better equipped. It adds a quickshifter, a 5-inch color TFT display in place of the standard model’s 5-inch LCD, and tubeless wire-spoke wheels instead of tube-type. The SE’s windscreen is 106mm (about 4 inches) taller, a D.I.D aluminum handlebar replaces the standard steel bar, metal-reinforced handguards are added, and a larger aluminum skid plate replaces the plastic one. A USB-C outlet in the cockpit is also standard on the SE. The quickshifter and USB-C outlet are available as accessories for the standard KLE650. Colors split by version: the KLE650 comes only in Pearl Blizzard White; the SE is offered in Pearl Storm Gray or Metallic Bluish Green.

  1. The 649cc twin is tuned for adventure duty. Kawasaki rates the KLE650’s powerplant at 70 horsepower at 8600 rpm and 47 lb-ft of torque at 7500 rpm, up from the Versys 650’s 66 horsepower and 45 lb-ft. Intake and exhaust tuning targets strong torque below 4000 rpm, and the intake cam timing is intended to add pull above about 6000 rpm. Fueling runs through 38mm throttle bodies with ride-by-wire, and a 180-degree crankshaft drives a balancer shaft. The upswept muffler leaves room for side cases mounted close to the bike’s centerline, and a radiator fan cover directs hot air away from the rider.

  1. Traction control and cruise control are standard on both KLE650s. The traction control has two modes. Mode 1 is the less intrusive setting, aimed at sport riding, and Mode 2 steps in sooner for wet pavement, cobblestones, and gravel. Cruise control is set with plus and minus buttons on the left switchgear, and it also disengages when traction control intervenes heavily. ABS can be switched off for unpaved surfaces; it resets to on, front and rear, every time the ignition is turned off.

  1. Power reaches the chain through a 6-speed transmission and an assist-and-slipper clutch. The SE’s quickshifter is designed to work from as low as 2000 rpm, with around-town riding in mind. Owners of the standard KLE650 can add it as an accessory.

  1. The trellis frame is lighter than the KLE500’s. Kawasaki puts the KLE650’s high-tensile steel frame at 37 pounds, against 42 pounds for the KLE500’s. The engine is a stressed member, and the swingarm pivots on a plate bolted to the back of the engine. The steel swingarm is 1.1 pounds lighter than the KLE500’s, with more vertical rigidity. The rear frame is built to carry two side cases and a top case concurrently. A plastic skid plate is standard, with a raised front section that covers the oil filter. The fuel tank holds 4.2 gallons, the same as the KLE500’s. The SE’s curb weight is 468 pounds, about 40 pounds more than the KLE500 SE. Kawasaki has not yet published the standard model’s weight or the ground clearance of either version.
  1. Suspension travel matches the KLE500’s, and the front brakes get a second disc. A non-adjustable KYB inverted 43mm cartridge fork provides 8.3 inches of travel, and the linkage-assisted shock delivers 7.7 inches of wheel travel with stepless spring-preload adjustment. Spring rates are intended to favor ride quality on pavement. Up front, two 300mm discs with two-piston calipers replace the KLE500’s single disc, and a 230mm disc handles the rear. The 21-/17-inch wire-spoke wheels have aluminum rims and wear Dunlop Trailmax Mixtour adventure tires with a pavement bias. The 150/70 rear tire is 10mm wider than the KLE500’s. Both the 650s and 500s have a 90/90-21 front tire.

  1. The rider is accommodated in a variety of ways. The rally-style windscreen sets at its standard height, 1.1 inches higher, or 2.2 inches higher. Clear panels flank the front cowling for additional wind protection. The seat height is 34.3 inches, and a low seat is available as an option. The standard model’s steel fat-type handlebar sits in a one-piece holder that is rubber-mounted to the top triple clamp. The footpeg rubbers come out without tools to expose serrated pegs. To increase legroom, the engine, clutch, and sprocket covers have flat profiles.

  1. The standard KLE650 gets a 5-inch LCD, and the SE’s 5-inch color TFT offers two layouts. The LCD shows gear position, range, and fuel consumption, along with smartphone notifications when paired with Kawasaki’s Rideology The App Motorcycle. The SE’s glass-bonded TFT alternates between white and black backgrounds automatically with ambient light. There is a sporty Type 1 layout and a rally-inspired Type 2 layout with larger navigation prompts. On-dash turn-by-turn navigation and voice command are SE features, and both require a subscription. The app also records GPS routes along with riding data.
  1. Kawasaki’s accessory list is built around touring. It includes a top case and bracket with passenger grab bars, panniers and pannier brackets, a rear carrier, a large windshield, handguards, heated grips, a USB-C outlet, LED fog lamps, a large skid plate, an engine guard, a low seat, an Ergo-Fit passenger seat, a center stand, a radiator screen, a GPS bracket, and an accessory relay.

  1. Kawasaki is selling the KLE650 on price and touring equipment. At $9999, the SE undercuts two 21-inch-front, twin-cylinder adventure competitors, the 2026 Honda Transalp ($10,199) and the 2026 Yamaha Ténéré 700 ($10,999), while the standard KLE650 sits $1400 to $2200 below them. Within Kawasaki’s own lineup, the standard model costs $1300 more than a KLE500 SE and adds 19 horsepower, cruise control, traction control, and a second front disc, while giving up the KLE500 SE’s handguards and aluminum skid plate. Kawasaki spent its money on electronics, brakes, and a luggage-ready frame rather than suspension, which keeps the KLE500’s travel and adjusts only for rear spring preload. The decision left for buyers is whether their riding calls for the Honda or Yamaha, and whether that is worth $200 to $2200 more. Our upcoming review will answer that question.
