The 2026 Monster Energy AMA Supercross Championship was turned on its head in Detroit on Saturday night. Although Ken Roczen won easily after taking the lead on lap 3 of the 24-lap Main Event, drama unfolded behind Roczen.

Hunter Lawrence came into the 11th round of the 17-round series with a nine-point lead and three wins in the last four races. A hard crash at the end of the whoops section sent Lawrence to the ground on lap 11 of 24, dropping him from P3 to P19. Although Lawrence regained one spot on lap 15, the damage was done. Even a lackluster performance by Eli Tomac, who finished a distant P5, was enough for Tomac to take the series lead by four points over Lawrence.

Chase Sexton returned from injury to win his Heat and finish a solid runner-up, grabbing the spot on lap 3 and never relinquishing it. Jorge Prado’s race turned to disaster on lap 3. Prado started the third lap in the lead. However, after being passed by Roczen and Sexton, Prado tangled with an over-optimistic Cooper Webb. Both riders went down, with Webb in P12 and Prado in P15. Webb eventually recovered to P6, while Prado’s night ended in P13.

Malcolm Stewart, who earned his first top 5 of 2026 last week, took advantage of the carnage to make his way to the Ford Field podium in P3. Stewart started in P5, moved up one spot on chaotic lap 3, and then inherited the podium slot when Lawrence crashed. Justin Cooper recovered from a poor P15 start to finish in P4 after passing Tomac on lap 19.

A crash at the end of the whoops cost Hunter Lawrence (#96) the championship lead. It is now in the hands of Eli Tomac.

Roczen enjoyed a perfect storm with his win, Lawrence’s fall, and Tomac’s mediocre ride to bring himself back into serious championship contention. While still in P3 in the standings, Roczen is now just 14 points behind leader Tomac after entering Ford Field 31 points behind then-leader Lawrence. Webb is now 26 points off the lead in P4, and Cooper is out of contention for the title, trailing by 53 points in P5 with six rounds remaining.

The series resumes on Saturday at The Dome at America’s Center in St. Louis. Be sure to check our 2026 Supercross Television Schedule for viewing details.
