No, this isn’t a story about the promised upcoming Kawasaki two-stroke. You aren’t also seeing double. However, you are seeing a pair of Kawasaki supercross bikes emblazoned with very similar graphics and #4. You’re looking at two bikes. One is the 2001 Kawasaki KX250SR that Ricky Carmichael rode to a Supercross title, and the other is a 2026 Kawasaki KX450SR decked out to look like it. As luck would have it, Chase Sexton is campaigning this year on a Kawasaki KX450SR sporting #4 in search of his second Supercross title.
Let’s go over the highlights of Carmichael’s 2001 championship run:
- The 2001 AMA 250cc Supercross Championship was Carmichael’s first premier-class Supercross title. He had finished the 2000 season in P5, which included his maiden 250-class win at Daytona International Speedway.

- Carmichael won the final 13 races of the 16-race season. Defending SX Champion Jeremy McGrath won two of the first three races—A1 and A2.

- Kawasaki had not had consecutive Main Event wins in the premier class of Supercross since 1988, when Jeff Ward accomplished the feat.
- Finished on the podium in every round. Outside of Carmichael’s 14 wins in 2001, Carmichael finished in P3 at A1 and P2 at A2.
- It was the start of a run of five SX titles in six years for Carmichael. Coming into the 2001 season, McGrath had seven SX titles in eight years.
- McGrath and Carmichael continue to share the record for the most wins in a season—14. However, McGrath performed the feat by winning the first 13 rounds of the 15-round 1996 season, and then the final round.
- Carmichael benefited from a new focus on physical conditioning. He had training oversight by Aldon Baker, which is credited with contributing to Carmichael’s breakthrough consistency and dominance.
- After taking the title on a Team Chevy Trucks Kawasaki KX250SR, Carmichael switched to Honda for the post-season US Open of Supercross in Las Vegas.
The Monster Energy Kawasaki 25th Anniversary Ricky Carmichael KX450SR will be on display at the San Diego Supercross round on Saturday.
