Calling all 2014-2016 Indian Motorcycle owners with models that feature the Thunder Stroke 111 (Chief Classic, Dark Horse, Chieftain, Roadmaster, Vintage, Springfield, and Chieftain Dark Horse).

The Polaris-owned brand has recalled 18,367 of these motorcycles due to a possible fire from elevated exhaust-gas temperatures.

Polaris reports that in the event of an engine misfire on the effected models, unburned fuel may pass through parts of the exhaust system, raising the exhaust temperatures. Elevated temps may result in a risk of a fire.

The solution is simple; Indian Motorcycle dealers will reflash the bike’s Engine Control Unit (ECU), which will have updated software that will detect engine misfires and will trigger a yellow warning light on the dash.

Indian will notify owners, and dealers will update the engine control module (ECM) software, free of charge. The recall is expected to begin in July 2016. Owners may contact Indian customer service at 1-877-204-3697. Indian’s number for this recall is I-16-02.

Owners may also contact the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236 (TTY 1-800-424-9153), or go to www.safercar.gov.
