MV Agusta Brutale 800
MV Agusta continues to make headlines this week regarding new models.
Earlier in the week, the Italian company teased a new model by releasing a sketch of an 800cc naked motard bike that will be unveiled at the EICMA this month.
The naked-styled motorcycle, expected to be called the “Rivale,” appears to take much styling attributes from a fellow Italian manufacturer, Ducati. The “Rivale” has a thick, Diavel-like rear section, and a front that resembles a Hypermotard.
And on Friday, MV Agusta again released information on a new model, the 2013 Brutale 800. But this wasn’t a tease; rather, MVA released all info, images and specs.
Featuring a 798cc triple, the Brutale 800 will fill the void left by the discontinued 920. For 2013, the Brutale 800 will be the middleweight between the Brutale 675cc triple, and the all-new Brutale 1090 four cylinder.
Besides the new 798cc engine that features MVA’s counter-rotating crankshaft, the Brutale 800 will also arrive with advanced electronics and adjustable suspension.
Part of the electronics includes the MVICS (Motor and Vehicle Integrated Control System), which includes full Ride by Wire with multi-maps and integrated, eight-level traction control. These maps feature three pre-sets and one the rider can personalize. The MV Agusta Brutale 800 is also available with optional Electronic Assisted Shift (ESA) for some extra cash.
The new 800’s engine is basically a bored-out version of the 675’s engine. The 800 pushes 125 horsepower at 11,600 rpm, which is 12 ponies more than the 675, and 60 ft. lbs. of torque at 8600 rpm. The engine features the counter-rotating crankshaft, something once only used in MotoGP. The design reduces inertia while changing direction, helping the bike’s overall balance.
The engine’s shell-molded crankcase also utilizes a “closed deck” with bores and integrated circuits for both oil and water (with an internal pump) . MVA says this design reduces component numbers and offers visual cleanliness to the engine exterior.
Speaking of the Brutale 800’s engine, MV Agusta says: “The power and torque curves are strengthened and increased ensuring prompt throttle response and a generous delivery across the entire rev range. This level of performance, associated with a dry weight of 167 kg (368 lbs.), put the Brutale 800 at the top of the category ‘naked’ setting the new benchmark.”
Like the other Brutale models, the 800 features the signature steel-trellis frame and single-sided swingarm, all united through two aluminum-alloy plates.
As for suspension, the Brutale 800 utilizes a 43mm, upside-down fork that features 125mm of travel, with adjustable compression, rebound and spring preload. The rear shock absorber provides 119mm of travel, and also features adjustable compression, rebound and spring preload.
Stopping the Brutale 800 are dual, 320mm discs up front from squeezed by Brembo four-piston radial calipers, and a single 220mm disc out back squeezed by a twin-piston Brembo caliper.
Speaking of design, MV Agusta says the “Brutale 800 is distinctive at first glance. A perfect combination of aesthetics, functionality, design and ergonomics. Form and substance. Unique in its kind, this three-cylinder is aligned with the standards of excellence of the Brutale 675, yet remains distinctive with new graphics and further detail enhancements.
“The overall compactness is visually impressive, with the mechanical components dominating; the three-cylinder engine is almost completely exposed to view, embraced by the distinctive frame and compact exhaust system. The silencer is modeled in such a way as to ensure maximum capacity and efficiency while remaining perfectly integrated. The tailpiece is essential yet elegant. Even the headlight characterizes the design, by combining the original elements and stylistic features of the Brutale range. The distinctive three element exhaust pipe remains another key visual component of MV Agusta Brutale.”
