The Japan Automobile Manufacturer’s Association (JAMA) recently released its production, sales and export figures for the month of May, 2012.
JAMA reports that although the number of motorcycles produced was down 22.2 percent, domestic sales were in the positive, up 0.2 percent.
May 2012 Motorcycle Domestic Sales by Class:
Domestic sales (factory shipment) in May 2012 stood at 34,622 units, an increase of 0.2 percent as compared with the same month of the previous year.

- 50cc or under 20,277 units, down 18.2%
- 51 – 125cc 7,868 units, up 49.2%
- 126 – 250cc 4,310 units, up 61.8%
- Over 250cc 2,167 units, up 17.3%
May 2012 Motorcycles Produced by Class:
Motorcycle production in May 2012 was recorded as 41,334 units. Compared with the 53,105 units total recorded for the same month of the previous year, this is a decrease of 11,771 units or 22.2 percent, and production decrease on the same month of the previous year after five months of upturn.

- 50cc or under 7,173 units, down 7,802 units or 52.1%
- 51 – 125cc 3,557 units, down 2,654 units or 42.7%
- 126 – 250cc 7,887 units, up 1,918 units or 32.1%
- Over 250cc 22,717 units, down 3,233 units or 12.5%
May 2012 Motorcycle Exports by Class:
Motorcycle export in May 2012 was recorded as 29,351 units. Compared with the 33,946 units total recorded for the same month of the previous year, this is a decrease of 4,595 units or 13.5p percent, and export decrease on the same month of the previous year after eight months of upturn.

- 50cc or under class 1,923 units, up 776 units or 67.7%
- 51 – 125cc class 3,101 units, up 194 units or 6.7%
- 126 – 250cc class 3,962 units, up 148 units or 3.9%
