Rock River HOG 15th Annual Fund Raiser

On September 26, 2009, over 2,000 motorcycle riders and enthusiasts will gather at Wisconsin Harley-Davidson in Oconomowoc for the Rock River Harley Owner’s Group (HOG) annual "Ridin’ to a Cure" fund raiser for breast cancer research in Wisconsin. Riders and volunteers will come together in hopes to raise in excess of $300,000 over the weekend. The ride has raised more than $3,200,000 since its inception and has seen steady increases in participation and donations each year. Contributions through the Rock River Cancer Research Foundation (RRCRF) have contributed significantly to research progress being made at the Medical College of Wisconsin in search of a cure for breast cancer.

"The Medical College of Wisconsin is deeply grateful to the Rock River Cancer Research Foundation for their support and partnership with the Medical College as we advance the war against breast cancer through scientific research," stated T. Michael Bolger, JD, president and CEO of the Medical College of Wisconsin. "The volunteers who make Ridin’ to a Cure possible and the ride’s participants who enthusiastically raise funds for cancer research all deserve our admiration and thanks."

Saturday’s Pledge Ride leaves roughly every 15 minutes from the dealership’s property and riders participate in a 60 mile scenic tour through the Kettle Moraine area. The ride ends at the Olympia Resort where lunch, beverages, door prizes and live entertainment await riders. Fundraising events include fish bowl raffles, live auction items, ride merchandise and a drawing for a 2010 Ultra-Classic Harley-Davidson motorcycle. Additional donations are raised throughout the year at www.ridintoacure.com.

Grant requests are reviewed and awarded annually by the foundation. Last year’s grant recipient of $150,000 was Dr. Carol Williams, Ph.D., an Associate Professor in the Department of Pharmacology and Toxicology at the Medical College of Wisconsin, directs a research laboratory that conducts studies on breast cancer. With previous support from the RRCRF, Dr. Williams made significant progress in identifying how a protein called SmgGDS may function in breast cancer cells to promote metastasis and are researching the development of drugs that will prevent cells from making this protein and thus halting metastasis.

Ken Matthews, chairman of the 2009 ‘Ridin’ to a Cure’ event comments, "We are extremely grateful for the generous support from companies like Wisconsin Harley-Davidson, Northwestern Mutual Life, Olympia Resort and Conference Center, Ewald Automotive, Geo-Synthetics, Inc. and Harris Marketing Group."
