The 2024 BMW F 900 GS replaces the F 850 GS and turns the middleweight GS into a more off-road-capable adventure bike, while the new F 800 GS takes over the street-focused role.
The F 900 GS weighs 31 pounds less than the 850, much of it trimmed high or far from the center of gravity. The 3.8-gallon plastic fuel tank alone is 10 pounds lighter than the old steel tank, and the rear subframe, Akrapovič muffler, and LED headlight are lighter, too. Curb weight is 483 pounds.
A handlebar raised 0.6 inches, footpegs lowered 0.8 inches, and a slimmer tank and tail make the GS feel like a big dirt bike when standing. The 34.3-inch seat height is tall; optional Rallye seats lower it 1.4 inches or raise it 0.8 inches.
The 895cc parallel twin from the F 900 R and F 900 XR makes 105 horsepower and 69 ft-lbs of torque, 10 horsepower more than the 850. A 270/450-degree firing order gives it a pleasant throb instead of a buzz, and the GS is stable and comfortable on long freeway stints.
A fully adjustable 43mm Showa inverted fork and a ZF shock with rebound damping and hydraulic spring-preload adjustment provide about nine inches of travel at each end. The suspension is compliant without being soft and stays balanced off-road. The $1495 Enduro Package Pro adds a fully adjustable 45mm Showa fork, a fully adjustable Sachs ZF shock, and a taller handlebar. Twin 305mm front discs with two-piston Brembo calipers have a soft initial bite that suits the dirt.
Road and Rain ride modes are standard. The $1750 Premium Package adds Dynamic, Enduro, and Enduro Pro modes, a quickshifter, cruise control, keyless ride, GPS prep, and tire-pressure monitoring. Enduro Pro is the dirt mode, with strong, linear throttle response, minimal traction control, and front-only ABS.
BMW prices the F 900 GS at $13,495 in Black Storm Metallic, São Paulo Yellow (Style Passion), or Light White / Racing Blue Matte Metallic / Racing Red (Style GS Trophy).
