Touratech has a new top model in its helmet range. The Aventuro Gravel Carbon is a carbon-shelled adventure helmet that converts three ways without tools, and the German accessory maker is aiming it at riders who split their miles between pavement, gravel, and trail. It joins an Aventuro motorcycle helmet lineup that already includes the fiberglass Matrix Pro, the carbon-laminate Pro Carbon+, and the Travel Carbon flip-up. Here is what riders need to know about the new Touratech Aventuro Gravel Carbon helmet:
The Gravel Carbon is one of the lightest helmets in its class. Touratech claims 3.3 pounds in size L with the peak and face shield fitted. The shell is X-Pro carbon, a composite Touratech says contains more than 60 percent carbon fiber. The company builds the helmet in three shell sizes so the thickness of the EPS liner stays matched to the head it’s protecting.
The Touratech Aventuro Gravel Carbon helmet is certified to both ECE 22.06 and DOT standards. ECE 22.06 is the current European standard and the tougher of the two on paper, testing oblique impacts and a wider spread of impact points than its predecessor. DOT approval means the helmet is street-legal in all 50 states.
Three configurations are possible for the helmet. Run the peak and the face shield together, and it’s a conventional adventure helmet. Pull the peak, and you have a full-face road helmet with cleaner airflow at speed. Pull the face shield alone, and it becomes an off-road helmet for use with goggles. Switching takes seconds and requires no tools. The eye port is generous to widen the field of view and, Touratech says, it accommodates nearly any goggle on the market.
A rubber strip inside the shell is meant to cut vibration. Touratech calls it the Anti-Vibration EPS System. A flexible rubber layer sits between the EPS sections, allowing a small amount of movement within the shell structure. The stated goal is to damp the buzz that air turbulence puts into a helmet at highway speed, which should mean a quieter ride and reduced neck fatigue.
Ventilation is adjustable at the chin, not just on or off. The chin section of the Touratech Aventuro Gravel Carbon helmet lets the rider steer incoming air. In cold weather, air can be sent only to the face shield to keep it clear without chilling the rider. As it warms up, the same air gets routed onto the face. Side vents at the cheeks add flow, while large exhaust ports at the back of the head and at the nape extract hot air.
The interior is built for long, sweaty days. Touratech uses a 3D mesh that moves air right down to the scalp. It is paired with a proprietary X-mart Dry fabric liner. All padding is removable and washable. The cheek pads route a hydration tube. A nose and wind guard can be added for cold weather, closing off most of the helmet opening down to the neck. An adjustable peak extension helps block the sun.
The Touratech Aventuro Gravel Carbon helmet’s chinstrap uses a double-D ring in an aluminum housing. Touratech’s X-Lock system is machined from Peraluman, a light, high-strength aluminum alloy. A magnetic tab that holds the loose strap end down instead of a snap.
An Emergency Quick Release System helps first responders get the helmet off. Pull tabs release the cheek pads while the helmet is still on the rider’s head. That reduces the movement needed to slide the helmet off, which matters when a neck injury is possible.
Camera and intercom mounting accommodations are standard. The Touratech Aventuro Gravel Carbon helmet ships with an integrated action camera mount, plus a second camera mount for the chin bar. The chin mount locks into four positions and rotates a full 360 degrees. Interfaces for common intercom systems are pre-fitted, so a comm unit drops in without cutting or shimming the liner.
Touratech has not announced a US price or on-sale date. The helmet is available now in Europe for €749, in two graphics and sizes S to 3XL. For context on where the US price may be set, Touratech USA currently lists the Aventuro Matrix at $730, the Aventuro Carbon Pro at $799, and the Aventuro Travel Carbon modular at $980. As the range-topping model, the Touratech Aventuro Gravel Carbon helmet should sit at or above the top of that spread.
