Double World Superbike champion Max Biaggi swept the board in the annual Caschi d’Oro (Golden Helmets) awards ceremony organized by Italian weekly magazine Motosprint, which represents the “Oscars” for Italy’s bike racing scene.

The 37th running of the event took place at the EICMA Auditorium in Milan on the sidelines to this year’s 70th edition of the international motorcycle exhibition.

The 41-year-old Biaggi, who retired from racing competition a couple of weeks back, won both the Golden Helmet award for his successful 2012 season on board a factory Aprilia RSV4 Factory machine, as well as a sixth Top Rider statuette, for which he had been voted by Motosprint readers. In the Top Rider contest Biaggi just got the nod on six-time Motocross World Champion Tony Cairoli and MotoGP winner Jorge Lorenzo.

Other awards, in what proved to be a Superbike-dominated evening, went to Luigi Dall’Igna representing Manufacturers’ champion Aprilia, Marco Melandri (BMW Motorrad Motorsport), both Ducati MotoGP’s new signings Andrea Dovizioso and Andrea Iannone for their results in MotoGP and Moto2, together with Romano Fenati (Moto3), Chiara Fontanesi (Motocross) and Italy’s national Supermoto team.

Guest of honour at the ceremony was Carmelo Ezpeleta of Dorna Sports, the man now in charge of the top two motorcycle racing championships, MotoGP and World Superbike.
