2012 Motocross: Kawasaki’s Villopoto Out

2012 AMA Supercross/Motocross

When the 2011 AMA Supercross Championship got underway at Anaheim I, the reigning champion Ryan Villopoto wasted no time defending his title.

The Monster Energy Kawasaki rider went on to win the season opener, and went on to clinch the 2012 SX Championship at Round 13 in Houston March 31, the earliest clinch in the series’ history.

But he wasn’t done yet; Villopoto returned at Round 14 to take yet another round, making for nine wins in 2012.

But things went sour for Villopoto at Round 15 in Seattle Saturday evening. The two-time AMA Supercross Champ was involved in a mid-pack wreck on the first lap. Due to the crash, not only did he DNF at his home round, he also tore up his knee.

And on Tuesday, his team reported that Villopoto’s injury requires surgery. Due to recovery time, he will miss the final two rounds of the 2012 AMA Supercross Championship (Salt Lake City, Las Vegas), and will also not be able to defend his AMA Motocross title.

Ryan Villopoto (Monster Energy Kawasaki) says: “I’m pretty disappointed right now. I have trained hard for this season and even though I won the supercross title, I really wanted to defend my outdoor championship. I’ve been through injury before and I know how hard I have to work to get back.”

Up until his injury, Villopoto was unstoppable, a trait he began displaying since joining the AMA Supercross class in 2009. In all, he has won 24 of 48 races. Overall, the 2012 AMA SX title was Villopoto’s seventh professional championship.
