Piaggio Recalls 2,147 Scooters (Vespa, Fly)

2012 Vespa, Fly Recall

The Italian manufacturer Piaggio has recalled 2,147 scooters due to electrical problems with ignition modules.

Piaggio says the following scooters have been recalled: certain model year 2011-2012 Fly 50 4T 4-Valve scooters, 2010-2012 Vespa LX50 4T 4-Valve scooters, and 2009-2012 Vespa S50 4T 4-Valve scooters.

Piaggio says the ignition control unit may fail and alter the ignition timing; if this occurs, the engine may backfire into the airbox, increasing the risk of fire.

Piaggio will notify owners, and dealers will replace the ignition control unit free of charge. The safety recall is expected to begin Jan. 17, 2012. Owners may contact Piaggio Customer Care helpline at 212-380-4433.
