2011 Monster Energy Cup
It was a huge payday for Monster Energy Kawasaki’s Ryan Villopoto Sunday, as the 2011 AMA Motocross and Supercross Champion capped the 2011 year off by winning the inaugural Monster Energy Cup at Sam Boyd Stadium in Las Vegas Saturday evening.
How huge? How about the biggest in Motocross history – $1 million. Villopoto was able to grab the cash after winning all three main events aboard the KFX450F.
The race consisted of three, 10-lap main events, in which Villopoto dominated each one. Villopoto grabbed holeshots in the first two Mains, and trailed privateer Mike Alessi on a Suzuki RM-Z450 early in the first lap of the final Main.
However, just after Alessi and Villopoto emerged from Monster Alley after traversing the motocross portion of the MX/SX hybrid track designed by Jeremy McGrath and Ricky Carmichael, Villopoto put a clean pass on Alessi and never looked back. He won all three Main events by wide margins and was never challenged.
