2011 MotoGP
When the first free practice session at Misano for Round 13 of the 2011 MotoGP Championship wrapped up Friday morning, it looked as if Casey Stoner would be the top rider when the second and final practice of Friday finished.
But current points leader Stoner was second fastest. Leading FP2 was the reigning MotoGP Champion, Yamaha Factory Racing’s Jorge Lorenzo.
The Spaniard was the only MotoGP rider to post under the 1:34 mark, and his 1:33.929 became the new fastest lap at Misano in San Marino. Lorenzo set the time on lap 10 of 22 during the 45-minute FP2 session, improving on his FP1 time by over a second.
Stoner was not far off Lorenzo’s time, though, the Australian 0.076 of a second slower. Third fastest was Stoner’s teammate Dani Pedrosa, who was 0.200 of a second slower than Stoner.
San Carlo Honda Gresini’s Marco Simoncelli bettered his FP1 time by over a half a second, the Italian posting a 1:34.44 for the fourth quickest time. Fifth fastest went to the American Ben Spies, who was the only rider to not improve on his FP1 time.
Sixth fastest went to the third and final Repsol Honda rider, Andrea Dovizioso, who posted a 1:34.989. He was followed by Rizla Suzuki’s Alvaro Bautista and Mapfre Aspar Ducati’s Hector Barbera.
Rounding out the top ten were Simoncelli’s teammate Hiroshi Aoyama and Monster Yamaha Tech 3’s Colin Edwards.
As for the Ducati duo of Valentino Rossi and Nicky Hayden, both riders struggled Friday with the GP11.1 at Misano. Rossi posted a 1:35.331, giving him the 11th quickest time in FP2, with Hayden in 13th.
The 17-rider MotoGP grid will be back on the Misano circuit Saturday for the third Free Practice session ahead of an hour-long qualifying session.
