Jorge Lorenzo took his first win of 2011 MotoGP at Jerez Sunday, making for two consecutive years of winning the Spanish Grand Prix.

The win, which was Lorenzo’s first under wet conditions, placed the Yamaha Factory YZR-M1 rider in the points lead; the Spaniard now has 45 points, nine points ahead of Repsol Honda’s Dani Pedrosa, who finished second at Jerez. Taking the final podium position at Jerez was the American Nicky Hayden aboard the Ducati Team GP11.

Lorenzo began the Jerez MotoGP race second from the grid aboard the Yamaha M1, next to pole-sitter Repsol Honda’s Casey Stoner (who suffered a DNF after a crash involving Ducati Team’s Valentino Rossi). Lorenzo got off the line in second at Jerez, and remained in the top three in the beginning of the 27-lap race as other rider crashed in the rain.

Riding patient, Lorenzo slipped the Yamaha into first position after the crash involving Rossi and Stoner on Lap 8. Lorenzo rode a smart race, finishing over 13 seconds ahead of Pedrosa.

Jorge Lorenzo (Yamaha Factory Racing) says: “With the competition so high this year I never imagined I would be the leader after two races. I am so happy to have won this weekend. It’s a great victory!”
