Marco Simoncelli entered the MotoGP class with high expectations. In 2008 he won the 250cc GP World Champion title and in 2009 he battled closely for but just missed out on recapturing the full glory before stepping-up to the premier GP class.
Last year, in Simoncelli’s rookie MotoGP debut, it was a mixed display of progress for the Italian, who by the end of the season was close enough to challenge for the podium on his Honda RC212V.
Having ended his first year eighth in the points, with a best result of 4th in Portugal, 2011 sees Marco Simoncelli continuing his quest to climb the MotoGP class order with the San Carlo Honda Gresini team.
Marco is teamed with former 250cc rival Hiroshi Aoyama on the Honda team, with the aim of regularly fighting for the podium a realistic target. And at the first test, the Italian was the fastest rider across all three days at the first official MotoGP test of 2011 in just his second year on the RC212V.
Simoncelli confirmed his outstanding form with this stunning performance on the third and final day of MotoGP testing at Sepang in Malaysia. Aoyama also enjoyed an encouraging final day, but could only manage 7th on the same machinery.
Marco Simoncelli (1st – 2’00.757 – 42 Laps – Sepang) says: "In the test at Valencia we realized that the new bike had potential and I already had a good feeling with it. Taking into account that this is not one of my favorite circuits we have still managed to build on our consistency from yesterday and this morning I was able to set an awesome lap."
