Dakar death: Spectator is killed

An accident has occurred involving the vehicle of competitor number 418. It left the track and collided with a group of spectators at the 75 km point in the day’s special stage, outside one of the designated "spectator zones".

Several people were injured including one who was left in a critical condition. They emergency services were quick to reach them and evacuate them alongside the race organizers’ medical assistance helicopters. A detailed report will be released later on in the day.

The race organizers and local authorities once again would like to remind the local population to exercise the greatest care and keep within the special "spectator zones" set up to ensure the smooth passage of the rally.

The spectator who was amongst the group hit by the vehicle of competitor number 418 at the 75 km point of the first special stage linking Buenos Aires to Cordoba, Sonia Natalia Gallardo, died this afternoon at the hospital in Cordoba.

The other victims involved suffered slight injuries and are currently under the care of the hospital services.

The race organizers wish to present their condolences to her family and are closely monitoring developments as regards the condition of the other injured spectators.
