Honda Police Motorcycle
After decades of devotion to Harley-Davidson as their mount of choice, motorcycle-mounted police agencies around the country have increasingly opted for a range of manufacturers (Kawasaki, Honda, BMW, Buell (now defunct), Zero, and others) .
Honda seems to be a top candidate in the demanding realm of policing the nation’s highways and the Honda ST1300P (P for Police) ABS is fast becoming a ubiquitous black and white enforcer.
To begin with the motorcycle is a Honda, so police and law enforcement agencies know they’re dealing with legendary reliability. Add to that the performance levels and quality of build of the popular sport touring Honda ST1300 and you have a strong platform to build off of.
ABS has become more of an essential part of the modern motorcycles for the public and for the police as opposed to years gone by when it was more of a costly option.
The Honda ST1300P ABS has a combined braking system that provides an added dimension of safety and control, especially when traveling over questionable surfaces (broken pavement, patches of slick and dirty road).
The Honda system uses an electric-motor-driven modulator that provides quick and precise braking pressure to the brakes/wheels to ensure smooth and steady braking with minimal wheel skip. Equipped with a self-diagnostic, interactive ECU test function, the system is protected against failure.
The ABS system is linked, front to rear, so that using either the front or rear brake levers automatically activates the other, providing added two-wheel braking performance as opposed to relying on just one engaged wheel. A delay valve helps slow response to the front brake to reduce front-end dive.
The Honda ST1300P ABS is fitted with a patrol speedometer, which provides graduated indicated speed in increments of just 2 mph above 10 mph for accurate speed assessment.
The traditional two-up motorcycle seat is replaced with an adjustable three-position dual-density solo seat to allow for additional storage space.
Handlebars are raised 25mm for increased rider comfort and the width is increased 13.5mm for added leverage to compensate for the additional weight a police bike bears while also aiding in extreme slow-speed maneuvering.
To accommodate those flashing lights that send dread through us when seen in the rear-view mirror, the police STs have specialized brackets to accommodate additional lights, siren, antenna, and radio/electronic gear. The electronics are kept safe and dry under a rear component cover.
The motorcycle engine guards on the right and left hand side provide additional supports for lights. All the police gear is operated off customized handlebar-mounted switches for easy access to the police officer’s hands and fingers.
Electronically operated windscreen provides 7.4 inches and 13 degrees of adjust-ability for wind protection and is bolstered by an add-on 8mm side fairing deflector set.
The ST1300P is powered by a Honda 1261cc DOHC 90-degree V-4 engine with an over-square bore and stroke (78mm x 66mm), which provides more than adequate power and speed for the job at hand. Driveshaft allows for a dependable final drive system requiring minimal motorcycle maintenance.
The Honda 1300 engine configuration helps keep the center of gravity low, essential for controllable low-speed handling. Two engine counter-balances smooth out engine vibration, which helps to significantly reduce rider fatigue.
A high-output 660-watt air-cooled alternator handles the excessive loads of the added electronic demands of a full-service law enforcement ST1300.
Lockable, detachable side bags hold 35 liters each and have a strap to limit opening to just 90 degrees to prevent spilling of contents. Body-protectors are used to prevent damage in the event of a tip-over.
A dual-section fuel tank places 5.5 gallons of fuel in the conventional tank location with an additional 2.2 gallons located in a sub-tank located low in the chassis.
Actual add-on weight for a full-service police ST1300 is hard to come by, but estimates put it at around 150 additional pounds of gear.
