Randy de Puniet started of the race after crashing in qualifying, to extend his sequence of successive Grand Prix starts to 190, having never missed a race since becoming a full-time GP rider at the start of 1999.

Unfortunately, the race was red flagged on lap 9 when LCR Honda rider Randy de Puniet crashed in turn four. de Puniet, who started on the third row for the 30-lap race, high-sided while he was in ninth position.

The crash brought down both Alvaro Bautista on his Rizla Suzuki and Aleix Espargaro on his Pramac Ducati, while the fellow Frenchmen Mika Kallio ran over the Randy’s leg.

De Puniet was taken to the Clinica Mobile and discovered fractures to both his left tibia and fibula. 

Randy de Puniet said after the crash: "It can’t be worse than this! I took a bad start from the third row but I was back to ninth and my race pace was pretty good. I could push for the sixth place despite my painful ankle after the crash in the qualifying."

It was a bad race weekend for de Puniet… but he surprisingly returned to action on his on his Honda RC212V only four weeks after the injury for the Cardion ab Grand Prix Czech Republic at Brno; Round 10 of the 2010 MotoGP Championship.

He finished a steady 10th behind Nicky Hayden in sixth, Edwards in seventh, Honda Gresini rider Marco Melandri in eight, and Ducati Aspar rider Hector Barbera in ninth.
