The Tenerife 40 Pons team has decided that Carmelo Morales, twice champion of Spain Extreme and two Superstock European champion 1000, is the replacement for the injured Axel Pons, for which the Dexeus Clinic physicians have estimated a period of recovery of about three weeks after the fall he suffered last Friday in Assen from which he fractured a few bones.
Morales, 31, is competing this season in the Championship of Spain of Moto2, being now second overall, eleven points behind leaders after winning the last test in Jerez disputed.
Carmelo Morales says: “Before this I mean it’s a shame you have to debut at the World Cup through injury of another driver. It is not the way you imagined it was going to do it … Axel I hope to recover as soon as possible and having much luck. I have to admit I’m very happy, and I did not expect to debut with Sito Pons. I was caught by surprise, and above all I am very grateful that you thought of me.”
“From what I have seen from the outside, Pons Kalex looks good, plus I’m aware of the experience they have in this team. Do not think it will be no handicap for the first time to test a bike, even with so little time, or that the tires are different from World of CEV. What intrigues me most is to discover what level, to understand what we could achieve. So I’m looking forward to Friday to take advantage of this opportunity so beautiful debut in the World Cup, and do it at home. ”
Sito Pons (Team Manager) says: It is unfortunate that Axel can not participate in the Grand Prix of Catalunya. To him it was important to participate here because we had high hopes that this could make a great result and that plus give him the confidence you need to be on a permanent basis in the front group.”
“But the races are. From a team point of view this is our home Grand Prix, we want to be a hundred percent and we are obliged to replace Axel with another driver. At this time we believe that the driver who is more fit and can do a better outcome is Carmelo Morales, and we want to give the alternative so you can really show what is inside. “
