The 2024 Kawasaki KLX300SM is a supermoto built on the KLX300 dual-sport, with 17-inch wheels and street tires. It works as both a canyon carver and an urban commuter, and it does so for $6599.
For 2024, Kawasaki redesigned the plastic, including the headlight cowling, fenders, radiator shrouds, and side covers. The narrower shrouds and smoother side covers make it easier to move around on the bike, while a smaller LED headlight, a tucked-in taillight, and a two-tone seat cover freshen the look.
Power comes from a 292cc DOHC single with fuel injection and a 6-speed transmission. It has enough power to get away from traffic, and it will not pull into license-threatening speeds on backroad straights.
The chassis is all about turning. A 25-degree rake, 2.8 inches of trail, a short wheelbase, and a 304-pound curb weight make the KLX300SM extremely agile while remaining predictable. Narrow IRC Road Winner RX-01 tires, a 300mm front petal disc, and a 240mm rear disc suit supermoto-style riding, and cornering clearance is virtually unlimited.
Long-travel suspension, with a 43mm inverted cartridge fork offering 9.1 inches of travel and a fully adjustable shock providing 8.1 inches of rear wheel travel, makes short work of potholes and curbs. It also raises the seat to 33.9 inches, though the light weight makes that height easier to manage.
The ergonomics are dual-sport based, with a wide handlebar and a natural, upright position. The tall seat gives a good view in traffic, and the KLX300SM filters through it better than most motorcycles. It is freeway-legal, though acceleration at freeway speeds is limited.
The KLX300SM suits urban riders who want an agile, affordable commuter that doubles as a weekend backroad tool, provided they can handle the seat height. It comes in Battle Gray or Phantom Blue.
