The highly anticipated opening round of the 2026 Pro Motocross AMA National Championship Series answered a few questions fans had going in, while leaving others hanging. At the end, Hunter Lawrence shook off his disappointing end to the Supercross championship series by going 1-1 under the California sun at Fox Raceway at Pala.
Hunter’s only competition at the Fox Raceway National was Jorge Prado, who briefly headed Hunter. Prado eventually dropped off Hunter’s pace in both motos, finishing 2-2 for P2 overall.
There were two opening-round subplots: Defending Pro Motocross Champion Jett Lawrence was returning from a serious foot injury that kept him out of the Supercross series, and Haiden Deegan was riding in the 450MX class for the first time after winning two 250MX titles.
Jett and Deegan suffered from poor starts in each moto, keeping them out of contention for the win. Jett started in P16 in Moto 1 before working his way up to P4. Jett improved to a P11 start in Moto 2 and a P3 finish. That was good enough for Jett to finish in P3 overall. Deegan did worse in both motos but converted a P19 start in Moto 1 into a P5 result. His Moto 2 P15 start was turned into a P4 finish. This left Deegan in P5 overall, behind Justin Cooper, who went 3-6 on the day.
Chase Sexton fell in both motos, preventing him from competing for the podium. His 7-5 results were good enough for P6 overall. Eli Tomac collided hard with Garrett Marchbanks on the opening lap of the first moto, resulting in both riders crashing. Marchbanks was able to remount, but Tomac had to be carried off the track and required further medical attention.
The series resumes on Saturday with the Hangtown Motocross Classic at Prairie City SVRA in Rancho Cordova, California.
