Klim GT1 Expedition First Look: Carbon, Koroyd Modular Helmet

Klim has introduced the GT1 Expedition, a carbon fiber modular touring helmet the company says is the first of its kind to use Koroyd impact-absorption technology. The GT1 Expedition will initially be available in limited quantities with an MSRP of $1000.

The GT1 Expedition is built around a hand-laid 3K pre-preg carbon fiber shell, with the same carbon construction extending to the chinbar. Klim uses three shell sizes and five EPS foam densities to maintain consistent fit and protection across the size range of XS to 3X. As the most popular size, the Large helmet has its own dedicated shell, liner, Koroyd + EPS configuration, and shell geometry.Klim GT1 Expedition First Look: Carbon Fiber Helmet

The Koroyd layer sits between the inner and outer EPS sections. Koroyd is a product of a Monaco-based company with the same name, and is technology transferred from the skiing world. Koroyd’s dual-walled, welded tubular cores crush uniformly on impact and rebound less than EPS alone. Klim says the combination lets the system handle both high- and low-speed impacts, while the open structure of the Koroyd also channels airflow through the helmet to manage heat.

“We went beyond just the protection aspects of a modular motorcycle helmet,” said Brent Harden, Klim Motorcycle Product Line Director. “We dove into every little detail that affects the riding experience: noise, weight, aerodynamics, heat mitigation — you name it.”

Klim developed an in-house wind tunnel to test the helmet at 75 mph, the speed range where aerodynamic and aeroacoustic forces are most relevant to touring riders. A key result of that work is the Dynamic Position Pivot Mechanism.

On a conventional modular helmet, the chinbar pivots on a fixed axis. This creates a faceshield gap that generates turbulence and noise. Klim’s mechanism shifts the chinbar outward before rotating it up, and then pulls it inward when closed so the shield sits flush. The result is a quieter, cleaner seal.

The chinbar of the Klim GT1 Expedition is secured with a dual-post stainless-steel latch. It is actuated by a button positioned where a rider’s hand naturally reaches. Also, the faceshield is installed and removed without tools.

Three adjustable vents manage airflow. A lower chin vent feeds air to the face, while an upper chin vent directs air at the shield to reduce fogging, with the chin vents using cam-lock closures.

The forehead vent pushes air into the Koroyd + EPS channels. Warm air exits through large exhaust ports at the rear. The Koroyd layer’s tubular structure passively moves air between the inner and outer EPS sections. The outer EPS acts as insulation against heat conducted through the shell.

The faceshield of the Klim GT1 Expedition modular helmet meets Optical Class 1 clarity standards, and a Pinlock 120XLT insert is included. The shield can be set to a cracked position for additional airflow. A photochromic treatment manages light, and IR protection in the faceshield keeps the interior of the helmet from heating up from sunlight. UV400 protection is standard across shield options.

Inside, the Klim GT1 Expedition uses an intermediate oval fit with interchangeable cheek pads and crown liners for fine-tuning. The liner material manages moisture and resists odor. Contact surfaces use perforated goat leather suede and spacer mesh. A gusseted chin skirt reduces buffeting and makes the helmet easier to put on and take off. Integrated ear pockets are shaped for communication systems, and Klim claims compatibility is near-universal.

The Klim GT1 Expedition modular helmet is a premium design that meets DOT and the more stringent ECE 22.06 protection standards. The $1000 price tag gets you a choice of three solid achromatic choices, two graphics choices, and an unadorned carbon fiber look.
