Adventure touring is one of the most demanding disciplines for motorcycle gear. Temperatures can hover near freezing one day, soar into sweat-inducing heat the next, and throw in a downpour just to keep things interesting. You’ll cover everything from high-speed highways to slow, technical sections of trail. Finding one jacket that can handle that entire range is no easy task.
The Richa Atlantic 2 GTX jacket is a well-built, sturdy waterproof touring piece from the Belgium-based company. Richa has been making premium motorcycle gear for decades and has recently expanded its U.S. presence with several standout offerings.
The Atlantic 2 is designed for four-season adventure riding. Its polyamide/nylon outer shell integrates Gore-Tex lining to balance flexibility, breathability, protection, and waterproofing. Three-layer sections cover the high-abrasion zones, while the two-layer and stretch panels improve comfort and range of motion.
The jacket feels substantial right out of the box—robust, with that “I can take anything” heft. Inside, a detachable thermal liner adds warmth for cold days and can double as a casual off-bike layer. A soft mesh inner lining promotes airflow and helps manage moisture.
Impact protection is handled by D3O CE Level 1 armor in the shoulders, elbows, and back, with Level 2 optional. There are also dedicated pockets for optional D3O chest inserts, creating a full-armor touring shell. The Atlantic 2 also carries an EN 17092-3:2020 Class AA rating, which covers touring and general riding. Extra reinforcement at the elbows adds durability in high-wear areas, while reflective elements enhance nighttime visibility.
Like many European brands, Richa cuts the Atlantic 2 with a more tailored silhouette. At five-foot-eleven and 190 pounds, I typically wear a large, and the large fits spot-on with the liner removed. With the thermal liner installed, it’s a bit more snug, though still comfortable.
The three-quarter-length touring cut provides excellent coverage, and the stretch panels help offset the stiffness of the heavier fabric. The main YKK zipper is a two-way design, allowing you to unzip from the bottom for added comfort when seated on the bike.
The laminated Gore-Tex fabric delivers first-rate waterproofing without the soggy-jacket feel of older membrane systems. While the Richa Atlantic 2 GTX is a heavier garment overall, it feels notably less bulky than an internal liner. Arm and waist adjusters let you fine-tune the fit, and every zipper, pocket, and flap has that reassuring premium feel that suggests long-term durability.
Venting options are abundant. Two fold-down magnetic chest flaps, a pair of vertical rear exhaust zips, and partial forearm vents work together to keep air flowing. A clever mesh front draft flap can be zipped together independently, allowing a full-length vent up front, while an exterior storm flap seals things tight when the weather turns.
After many miles in mixed conditions—cool mornings, warm afternoons, and intermittent rain—the Atlantic 2 impressed me with its versatility. The jacket feels solid and protective, yet never soggy or cumbersome, even after hours in the rain.
In hotter weather, the thick laminated fabric does start to retain heat, especially above the low 80s. The chest vents could be larger, and I’d trade the magnets for sturdier snaps to keep them open at speed. A longer forearm vent and a larger rear exhaust would further improve airflow. Still, Richa has struck a commendable balance between waterproofing and breathability.
The removable thermal liner extends the comfort range into cold-weather riding, while bi-directional sleeve zips, hip gussets, and draft flaps let the jacket adapt on the fly. A neoprene-backed collar seals comfortably and can be looped open on hot days. Permanent wrist gaiters with thumb loops keep drafts out and gloves sealed in.
Richa didn’t skimp on storage for the Atlantic 2 GTX. Two large, waterproof external hand pockets flank the shell, and inside you’ll find multiple internal compartments. At the lower back, a roomy pocket easily swallows gloves, liners, and other soft cargo.
The Atlantic 2 also includes both long and short connection zippers to pair seamlessly with the matching Atlantic 2 Gore-Tex trousers ($613)—or any compatible trousers—creating a true touring system. The pocket layout feels deliberate and practical, never gimmicky, with just the right balance of utility and restraint.
The Richa Atlantic 2 GTX jacket is serious adventure-touring equipment. It’s not a featherweight or a summer mesh shell; it’s built for riders who ride through everything, rain or shine, mile after mile. If your idea of adventure involves crossing states or continents, this jacket is ready to go the distance.
