2024 Yamaha MT-09 First Look [15 Fast Facts]

The Yamaha MT-09 gets a wide variety of updates this year. While no single update is earth-shattering, collectively, they should make for an improved 2024 Yamaha MT-09. So, let’s get to the Fast Facts.

  1. The 2024 Yamaha MT-09 has a new customizable ride mode. In addition to the preset Sport, Street, and Rain modes, the rider can set up a personalized mode with parameters including power, traction control, slide control, wheelie control, and more. This can be performed on the new five-inch TFT display, or on a smartphone connected to the dash via Bluetooth and Yamaha’s Y-Connect app. Turn-by-turn navigation is available using the Garmin StreetCross app.
  1. Electronically controlled engine compression braking is added to the rider aids suite. When the slipper clutch isn’t enough, the electronics will step in to help prevent the rear tire from skidding. If you don’t want this feature, it can be turned off.
  1. Now in its third generation, the quickshifter has two settings to expand functionality. Setting 1 is the standard setup that allows clutchless upshifting during acceleration and downshifting while decelerating. With Setting 2 engaged, riders can also downshift without a clutch during acceleration, or upshift when slowing down.

  1. The 2024 Yamaha MT-09 is fitted with the new Bridgestone Battlax Hypersport 23 tires.
  1. You know Yamaha is a hi-fi component manufacturer when it has a feature called Acoustic Amplifier Grilles. We will let a Yamaha insider describe this feature: “The 2024 MT-09 features a new two-duct intake design with acoustic amplifier grilles located on top of the fuel tank to accentuate high-frequency induction sounds, delivering the CP3’s thrilling induction roar directly to the rider for an enhanced sensation of torque and acceleration.” You can see the grilles in the photo of the top of the fuel tank—they sit at the upper left and right of the locking filler cap.

  1. The front braking system gets a new Brembo radial master cylinder. The 298mm discs and radially mounted four-piston calipers return.
  1. Yamaha engineers gave the 2024 Yamaha MT-09 a new fuel tank. While it holds the same 3.7 gallons, the tank sits 1.2 inches lower and has less-rounded edges.
  1. The ergonomics are sportier on the new MT-09, and they are adjustable. The handlebar is lower for 2024, and can be mounted in either of two positions. The footpegs have been moved back, adding to the more aggressive seating position. Also, the new clutch lever is adjustable.

  1. The new two-piece seat is narrower, making it easier to touch the ground. The seat height remains unchanged at 32.5 inches.
  1. With the new ergonomics on the 2024 Yamaha MT-09 come updated suspension settings. The spring rates have been upped, and the damping reset to compensate for the new seating position and the new Bridgestones. Also, the KYB shock gets new linkage to increase traction and feeling.
  1. To aid in parking lot maneuvers, the steering sweep of the handlebar has been increased by four degrees.

  1. Cruise control is standard. It works in 3rd gear or higher, as long as you’re traveling at at least 25 mph. Once you’ve set your speed, you can adjust it in one-mph increments at the push of a button. This is done using the new switchgear.
  1. The all-LED lighting gets reworked. The headlight is smaller and flatter, while putting out the same amount of light. The stealthy headlight shroud is redesigned, and features integrated running lights. The taillight is new and slimmer, while the four turn signals are transparent LEDs.

  1. Speaking of the turn signals, they’ve gone high-tech. In addition to being self-canceling after 15 seconds and 500 feet of forward progress, they have a quick-flash function—a soft switch click triggers just three flashes. A full click has the usual results.
  1. The 2024 Yamaha MT-09 has a price tag of $10,599. That’s an $800 jump over last year’s MSRP. You won’t have to rush down to the Yamaha dealer to get one—the 2024 MT-09 won’t be on showroom floors until March 2024. When you get there, you’ll have three colors to choose from—Midnight Cyan, Matte Raven Black, or Team Yamaha Blue.
