Troy Bayliss Classic 2016
The Legends class at the 2016 Motul, Pirelli Troy Bayliss Classic presented by Insure My Ride, Garden Master and Shark Helmets will be comprised of just that – legends of the motorcycle racing, including some of the most revered champions.
Four-time Long Track World Champion (Sweden) Joonas Kylmakorpi will make his Australian debut, pitted against former teammate and Speedway GP rival three-time World Champion Jason Crump.
“Joonas and I started racing against each other about 16-17 years ago,” Crump explained. “I have a lot of respect for him, we enjoyed a friendly rivalry and raced hard but we always had time for each other off the track. We raced against each other in quite a few Grand Prix races and we were also in the same speedway teams together.
“Last weekend at Kempsey was the first time we had seen each other since 2012, it is great to have Joonas in Australia for this event. This style of racing is not our normal style, but the spirit of the event is about bringing riders like Joonas over while giving Aussies like myself the chance to throw a leg over the bike and meet some fans.
“I look forward to riding against Joonas and I’m sure when the gate drops we will renew our old rivalry and then have a cold drink and have a laugh about the race,” Crump added.
Kylmakorpi arrived in Australia late last week and since then has spent the weekend testing at Kempsey’s Greenhills Speedway along with Crump and several other competitors.
“I am very pleased to be in Australia, and I am grateful that Troy has invited me for his event,” Kylmakorpi said. “Dirt track is a big part of my off-season preparations as it is the closest discipline to speedway.
“The Troy Bayliss Classic is going to be challenging as it has left and right-hand corners, plus I had to learn to ride a bike with a front brake.
“Last weekend I had the chance to practice and chat with the rest of the guys, but catching up with my former team-mate Jason Crump was really special. He is a speedway legend and one of the most successful riders ever. It has been great to catch up and exchange stories and opinions. He is a guy that I have learnt a lot from.
“Being in Australia is great fun, I am enjoying every second of it, but racing is no jokes. I am aiming to put on a great show and I am looking forward to my Troy Bayliss Classic debut,” Kylmakorpi added.
Australian born and first racer to claim a gold medal at the International Six Day Endurance event, Phil Lovett, who also has three Finke Desert Race titles under his belt, has returned for his fourth attempt at the legends title.
Three-time Australian Superbike Champion Shawn Giles, five-time Mr Motocross Stephen Gall, AMA Pro road racer Damon Buckmaster, motocross legends Vaughan Style and Kevin Horten, three-time Mr Motocross Anthony Gunter and dirt-track legend Chris Watson complete the line-up.
