BMW Riders Complete 40K Adventure

Discover Our Earth Motorcycle Tour

Riders on a range of BMW Motorrad’s adventure sports motorcycles, including the R 1200 GS Adventure, F 800 GS and F 650 GS, have successfully completed a record-breaking, eight-month, 40,000-mile ride around the world.

The “Discover Our Earth” tour, run by motorcycle adventure specialists GlobeBusters, travelled through 27 countries across six continents lasting 248 days.

Kevin Sanders (Expedition Leader and founder of GlobeBusters) says: “Our epic expedition recently ended in Austria – and it was a truly incredible motorcycling experience. Along the way we watched the Dakar R0 GS Advenally start in Buenos Aires and the sun set over Uluru.

“We trekked up to Machu Picchu and climbed the Great Wall of China. We rode from 27 metres below sea level to over 4,800 metres above. We crossed the Andes, the Sahara, the Russian Steppe, the Urals, the Carpathians, the Alps, the Equator, Tropic of Cancer and Capricorn, the Golden Triangle, the Panama Canal. We also rode two legendary routes – Silk Road and the Pan American.”

The “Discover Our Earth” trip took 18 months to plan and was put together by Kevin and his wife – and fellow motorcycle adventurer – Julia, along with the team at GlobeBusters Motorcycle Expeditions and in association with Edelweiss Motorcycle Travel. While Kevin was leading the round-the-world adventure, Julia has been overseeing operations back at base and putting together plans for BMW Tours in 2012.

Kevin Sanders says: “I’m over the moon it’s come to a successful completion and it’s a huge relief it’s done. It’s been a 24/7 job and the continual responsibility for the motorcycle team, keeping them motivated and on schedule rests with me, no matter what we encounter. It’s the toughest thing I’ve ever done.

“That might sound strange from someone who holds a World Record for riding around the world on a BMW R 1150 GS in 19 days, but it’s a totally different challenge. On that World Record it was just me and the road, so it’s quite a selfish exercise. ‘Discover our Earth’ was a marathon with a huge team of individual riders to manage. That made it very tricky – but very, very rewarding, too.”

Kevin and Julia, like the majority of riders on the “Discover Our Earth” trip, have chosen the BMW GS adventure-sports motorcycles throughout their many years of travel. “This trip has tested me and my BMW R 1200 GS Adventure to the limit. I think that maybe the bike faired better than me!”

Julia Sanders says: “The next ‘Discover our Earth’ will be even longer and will include more countries and more miles! Kevin and I are also putting some of his local knowledge gained on this trip into use on BMW Tours’ ‘Ride to the End of the World’ trip to Patagona in March 2012.

“South America’s southern wilderness provides a combination of spectacular landscapes and remote terrain to provide an incredible riding opportunity on some of the best adventure motorcycling roads in the world – it is the ideal playground for the BMW R1200GS and this has to be one of the most exciting Tours offered by World of BMW to date”
