The 2024 Triumph Scrambler 1200 X is the accessible, street-friendly sibling of the off-road Scrambler 1200 XE. It replaces the XC at a price $1150 lower, with an MSRP of $13,595, and its lower stature is intended to attract a wider audience.
The 1197cc vertical twin is the Bonneville High Power engine, with a 270-degree crank, 89 horsepower at 7000 rpm, and 81 lb-ft of torque. Its on-demand grunt gives great control in the dirt and plenty of excitement on pavement. The 6-speed transmission shifts crisply, and the clutch pull is light.
IMU-supported rider aids are new, bringing cornering ABS and lean-sensitive traction control. Sport, Road, Rain, and Off-Road modes and a customizable Rider mode adjust them. Off-Road softens throttle response and switches to front-only ABS. ABS can’t be turned off completely.
A round LCD/TFT instrument shows the essentials at a glance, and USB charging ports are under the seat. The X keeps the original switchgear rather than the XE’s backlit units, one of the ways it saves money.
Marzocchi suspension provides 6.7 inches of travel at each end, over an inch less than the XC. The fork is non-adjustable, and the piggyback-reservoir shocks adjust only for spring preload. The lower center of gravity makes the X eager in canyons and forgiving in sand, though the footpegs touch down sooner, and heavier hits find the bump stop.
The 32.3-inch seat is two inches lower than the XE’s, and an accessory seat drops it another inch. A bench seat and a narrower handlebar make a neutral riding position that works sitting or standing.
Up front, axial-mounted two-piston Nissin calipers and 310mm discs have a firmer pull than Brembos and don’t give up much performance. The 21-/17-inch tubeless wire-spoke wheels wear road-focused Metzeler Karoo Street tires. Michelin Anakee Wild knobbies are OE-approved for riders who go off-road often.
Colors are Carnival Red, Ash Grey, and Sapphire Black. Triumph offers accessories for a more rugged look or light touring, including Givi/Triumph bags. The 503-pound X suits riders who spend most of their time on the street and want to explore fire roads and smooth trails.
