Red Bull MotoGP Rookies Cup to Estoril

Red Bull Rookies Cup: Round 3 & 4

The world’s most talented young motorcycle racers return this MotoGP weekend to Estoril for races three and four of the 2011 Red Bull MotoGP Rookies Cup.

It’s the first time the Red Bull MotoGP Rookies Cup has visited the Portugal circuit since 2008; that year, the top three riders were only covered by .05 of a second: Daijiro Hiura, the American JD Beach (now in AMA Sportbike) and Sturla Fagerhaug.

But the 2011 Rookies Cup grid already knows the Estoril circuit; the 14-race series that runs parallel to MotoGP held a three-day practice session there in March.

The current Red Bull MotoGP Rookies Cup points leader, Philipp Oetti, will not start this weekend due to a broken collarbone; Oetti, the son of former 125 MotoGP rider Peter, broke the bone during a wreck while testing his German Championship bike.

Also missing from the grid will be Florian Alt, who continues to recover from the nasty finger injury he suffered at the opening Rookies weekend in Jerez. According to the Red Bull Rookies Cup, Xavier Pinsach and Javier Orellana both sustained shoulder injuries in Jerez but are due to be fit for the coming weekend.

During the opening round in Jerez, Oetti took the win over Brad Binder of South Africa, with Alan Techer of France taking third.

In Round 2, Oetti wasn’t able to slip past Arthur Sissis (Australia), and had to settle for second. Taking the final podium position was Aaron Espana of Spain.

Red Bull MotoGP Rookies Cup says with 44 TV broadcasters around the world showing the race action there is ample opportunity to follow the young heroes and for those not covered by the spread of live TV the live race feed can always be seen on redbullrookiescup.com where the latest news and information can also be found.

There will be three practice sessions on Friday, followed by the third round at 16:30 (CET) Saturday, April 30, and the second round at 16:00 (CET) on Sunday, May 1.
