Monster Energy Kawasaki’s Ryan Villopoto regained the AMA Supercross points’ lead after taking second Saturday evening in Cowboys Stadium, Arlington, Texas, Round 13 of the 18.
Villopoto ran a good race, but couldn’t catch the winner, Trey Canard on the American Honda CRF450R. Taking the final spot on the podium was the reigning AMA Supercross Champion, Ryan Dungey on the Rockstar Makita Suzuki RMZ450.
Villopoto got out of the gate fifth behind Canard, Two-Two Motorsports Honda’s Chad Reed, San Manuel Yamaha’s James Stewart and Dungey. As Canard pulled ahead, Reed and Stewart began a fierce battle for second place. But midway through the race, the two collided, allowing Dungey and Villopoto to pass.
Villopoto remained in third until Dungey collided with a lap rider, giving the KX450F rider second, which he kept to the checkered flag.
Ryan Villopoto (Monster Energy Kawasaki KX450F) says: “Tonight was crazy. I got an ok start. There was a little problem with my bike, but nothing major. I just kept plugging away and things worked in my favor. The track was really tough for 20 laps, so sometimes you just got to sit back and let things happen.”
Although Villopoto regained the Supercross lead, he doesn’t have it by much; with four rounds remaining, Villopoto now leads Reed by six points, with Dungey in third only a point behind Reed.
