2024 Triumph Speed 400 Buyer’s Guide [Specs, Price]

The 2024 Triumph Speed 400 is the first single-cylinder street bike from Triumph since the brand’s revival in the 1980s. It is the junior member of the Speed family, below the Speed Twin 900 and 1200, and takes its single shock and sporty demeanor from the Speed Triple. It is built to welcome newer riders while giving experienced riders plenty to enjoy.

The all-new 398cc TR-series single is a DOHC, liquid-cooled, short-stroke design developed in Hinckley with engineering partner Bajaj Auto. The ride-by-wire engine makes 40 horsepower at 8000 rpm and 28 ft-lbs of torque at 6500 rpm, delivered smoothly across the rev range. It is freeway-capable and holds its own in fast traffic, though vibration reaches the mirrors and contact points above 70 mph.

The 6-speed transmission shifts precisely, and the cable-actuated assist-and-slipper clutch is light with good feel. Ample low-rpm torque, a narrow waist, and tucked-in bar-end mirrors make the Speed 400 a natural city bike.

A tubular steel frame, cast-aluminum swingarm, and bolt-on subframe carry a non-adjustable 43mm Showa Big Piston inverted fork with 5.5 inches of travel and a spring-preload-adjustable piggyback-reservoir shock with 5.1 inches. The suspension balances urban comfort and sport capability, steering is light without being nervous, and the bike is stable at speed.

Ten-spoke 17-inch cast-aluminum wheels wear Metzeler Sportec M9 RR sport tires. A radially mounted four-piston caliper grips a 300mm front disc, with strong stopping power and no harsh initial bite. Dual-channel ABS and switchable traction control are standard.

Ergonomics are neutral and nearly upright, with a 31.1-inch seat height and a 375-pound curb weight. The dash pairs an analog-style speedometer with an LCD inset, a USB-C outlet charges a phone, and lighting is all LED.

The Speed 400 is offered in Carnival Red, Caspian Blue, and Phantom Black, with an MSRP of $4995. Its classic styling, premium finish, and modern suspension give it the look and feel of a bigger, more expensive motorcycle.
