Sena Outlander Helmet First Look: ADV and Mesh 3.0

Sena has released its first adventure helmet, the Outlander, with the company’s own communications hardware and LED lighting built into the shell. It is available now through Sena’s website and authorized dealers. You can choose among five sizes and two colors, Matte Black and Graphic Glossy White. The MSRP is $599. Going integrated means there’s a single charge port, no external module hanging off the shell to catch branches, and the speakers are designed into the helmet.

The Outlander marks the first time Sena has put its own communications hardware in a helmet for on- and off-road use. The company spent more than two decades selling intercoms that clamp onto other brands’ helmets. This one ships with Mesh Intercom 3.0, Wave Intercom, Harman Kardon-tuned speakers, and LED lights already wired in.

The shell is composite fiberglass over a multi-density EPS liner. Sena lists a Medium at roughly 3.8 pounds. That figure is for the finished helmet with the electronics aboard, as there is no version of the Outlander without them. Certification is DOT for the US market and ECE R22.06 for Europe.

The peak of the Sena Outlander helmet unbolts with hand-operated screws, no tools required. The faceshield pulls free without removing the peak first; lift it slightly, then slide it out. That’s convenient on a ride as you move from pavement to the dirt.

While the faceshield that ships with the Outlander helmet is compatible with Pinlock 70, the Pinlock anti-fog insert and a tinted shield are extra-cost accessories.

Inside, the interior is a semi-oval shape with moisture-wicking, quick-drying Coolmax fabric. The box includes a helmet pouch, two microphone sponges, and a USB-C charging cable. Firmware is delivered over the air through the app.

The Outlander helmet uses Mesh Intercom 3.0 software. As is now standard, a 1.2-mile reach between riders in open terrain is claimed. Open Mesh gives you six channels with no cap on how many riders join. Group Mesh handles up to 24 riders in a closed network.

Wave Intercom software is also included, though it works on a different principle. Wave operates over cellular data through the Sena Motorcycles app. Distance no longer matters, though everyone must have a cell signal. Group size is unlimited. Each system gets its own button on the side of the helmet, so switching doesn’t require working through a menu.

The speakers are tuned by Harman Kardon, and Sena badges the helmet accordingly. Bluetooth 5.3 handles smartphone and GPS connections. AI-based noise cancellation works on the microphone side, filtering wind and engine noise out of your voice before it is sent to other riders.

Sena claims 20 hours of talk time and a 2.5-hour recharge over USB-C. That covers a long weekend of riding without hunting for an outlet at every fuel stop, carrying an external battery, or plugging into an on-bike power supply. Riders running music and navigation constantly should expect shorter battery life.

An LED front light and a brake-sensing taillight are built into the shell. The Outlander helmet senses when you are slowing and activates a brake light at eye level for the driver behind you. The front helmet light is designed for reading a map in low light, assisting in after-dark repairs, and increasing the rider’s visibility on a trail. It shuts off on its own after 10 minutes to reduce battery draw, and that timer is adjustable in the app.

Sena’s 50S mesh headset carries a $379 MSRP, which leaves roughly a third of the Outlander’s cost dedicated to the helmet. The Sena Outlander adventure smart helmet is available now.
