2014 Donington Supersport Results

For the second time in 2014 World Supersport, Pata Honda World Supersport’s Michael van der Mark was victorious.

The rider of the Netherlands qualified on the pole for the 20-lap race, but had a bad start, beginning in sixth. But he worked his way to the front of the pack, and battled intensely with MV Agusta RC-Yakhnich Motorsport’s Jules Cluzel on the final lap.

The 21-year-old CBR600RR pilot van der Mark was able to fend off the Frenchman Cluzel on the final three corners to take the win. Taking the final podium position was DMC-Panavto Yamaha’s Kev Coghlan.

“It’s been an amazing weekend and we were really fast from the beginning when it was dry on Friday. Yesterday, in the wet, I took my first pole position but today my start to the race wasn’t that good. I struggled with grip in the first few laps but later in the race, when I found my own pace, I got faster and faster,” van der Mark says.

“I caught the group in front of me and passed them slowly. When I managed to pass them I was able to go away and then had a nice fight with Jules [Cluzel]. I made a few small mistakes and for the last two corners I didn’t want to take too much risk. I’m really happy and want to thank the team – we’ve worked hard all weekend and then I had a silly crash in warm-up. Luckily they were able to repair the bike quickly and it was perfect today.”

Taking fourth was the reigning WSS Champion Kenan Sofuoglu. The Kawasaki ZX-6R pilot suffered some technical issues, but was able to finish just outside the podium. Rounding out the top five was Kawasaki Intermoto Ponyexpres pilot Florian Marino.

With his win at round five, van der Mark was able to extend his lead to 14 points over Marino. As for his teammate, Imola Supersport winner Lorenzo Zanetti was forced to DNF due to mechanical issues aboard his CBR600R.

The 2014 World Supersport series now heads to Sepang in two weeks for round six of 13.
