Tragedy Hits Australasian Safari

Australasia-Safari-Leg 4-Ivan-Erceg

On Leg 5 of the Australasian Safari in Western Australia, there was an incident involving popular Moto competitor Ivan Erceg on Stage 1, 50 kilometeters east of Minilya Roadhouse near Carnarvon in Western Australia. Despite the immediate intervention of emergency services, he died at the scene as a result of his injuries.

Australasian Safari Event Director Justin Hunt said: “We extend our sincerest sympathies to Ivan’s family, team members and friends at this time. Ivan was one of life’s huge characters and was loved by the entire Safari family. He was a true competitor who loved his motorbikes and the mateship of competition. He will be sorely missed.”

A full investigation of the circumstances surrounding Ivan’s death has already commenced and organisers are providing full cooperation.

After Leg 4, Erceg was quoted as saying, “The cows are friendly! I saw a few emus out there today too. I got lost for about three minutes but otherwise it was a good day. The bike’s going sweet as and I felt safe today with the mechanic who built my bike, Paul Nappy, following behind me. I’m happy in my position, I’m leading my class and just have to ride it home now.”

The remainder of today’s Leg of the Australasian Safari was cancelled, but the event will resume tomorrow.
