Monster Energy Kawasaki’s Ryan Villopoto just missed the podium Saturday evening in Dodger Stadium, Los Angeles.
The KX450F rider, who won the season opener at Anaheim I, was engaged in a first-lap battle with Red Bull KTM’s Ryan Dungey during the outset of the 20-lap main, but the race was red flagged due to a crash involving Muscle Milk Honda’s Trey Canard and Villa Yamaha’s Ryan Morais.
On the restart, Villopoto didn’t get off the line too well, starting in the pack of the pack. But the reigning AMA Supercross Champion began picking riders off one-by-one, and eventually made it to fourth-place, where he finished behind Joe Gibbs Racing Yamaha’s James Stewart (third), Dungey (second) and race-winner, Two-Two Motorsports Honda’s Chad Reed.
Kawasaki reports that over the past two rounds, Villopoto has had to make a total of 28 passes and now sits tied with Reed for second place in the points standings, just four points back from the leader (Dungey).
Ryan Villopoto (Monster Energy Kawasaki KX450F Supercross) says: “I made a mistake on the first lap and jumped off the track after the triple. I was last yet again and just had to pass as many people as I could.
“Fourth is all right, but isn’t going to cut it. This track was a lot harder to pass on than last weekend and it would have been a fun track to race on up front. We have shown that my fitness and the speed of my KX450F are there, so I just need to dial my starts this week.”
Round 4 of 17 in the 2012 AMA Supercross Championship occurs in O.com Stadium in Oakland, Calif., Saturday. Attached above is wallpaper highlighting Villopoto’s efforts at LA Supercross.
