The reigning MotoGP Champion Jorge Lorenzo began the 2011 season with a podium finish, taking second Sunday at Losail International Circuit, in Doha, Qatar, behind race-winner Casey Stoner (Repsol Honda).

Lorenzo didn't impress too much during the three free-practice sessions for the opening round of 2011 MotoGP, but stormed to a third-place start, qualifying last on the first row; he has now qualified on the front row in every Qatar race.

When the race began, it quickly became a three-way battle between Stoner and his teammate Dani Pedrosa on the Honda RC212V prototypes, and Lorenzo on the Yamaha Factory Racing YZR-M1.

Lorenzo remained in third until eight laps remained, and then he overtook his fellow countryman Pedrosa for second, keeping the position until the end. Lorenzo eventually finished 3.440 seconds behind Stoner. Pedrosa finished in third.

Jorge Lorenzo (Yamaha Factory Racing M1) says: "I think maybe I am more proud of that podium than a race victory – that's how I feel tonight. I put everything I had into my riding from the start to the end, and I was on the limit every lap."
