2011 AMA Supercross

The 2011 AMA Supercross series heads to Chase Field in Phoenix this weekend for Round 2 of 17.

At last week’s season opener in Anaheim, Monster Energy Kawasaki rider Ryan Villopoto took the win. He was followed to the line by reigning Supercross Champion Ryan Dungey and San Manuel Yamaha rider James Stewart, a two-time SX champion.

Following are some Supercross stats and facts heading into Phoenix:

  • The first race held in Phoenix was on March 16, 1991, and Jean-Michael Bayle won on a Honda.
  • Phoenix did not host a race from 1992-1998. In 1999, the championship returned to Phoenix and has been a fixture on the tour ever since. This will be the 14th time the gate will drop for a Supercross class race in Phoenix.
  • Ezra Lusk won his last Supercross class race in Phoenix on a Kawasaki in 2003.
  • James Stewart is the only rider to win Phoenix in both Supercross and Supercross Lites classes.
  • Ryan Dungey earned his first career Supercross class victory in Phoenix in 2010.

Supercross Class Recap from Anaheim

Ryan Villopoto earned his 10th career Supercross class win. He is now tied with Broc Glover on the all time Supercross win list.

It was the first Kawasaki sweep since Houston in 2010 when Villopoto and Pourcel won both classes.

Kawasaki swept four races last year and has now won a Supercross class main event in seven consecutive years

With a fifth-place finish at Anaheim 1, Chad Reed has now gone 10 seasons with at least one top-five finish. He now has 110 top-five finishes

Kevin Windham is in his 15th season of Supercross class racing, and in 11 of those seasons, he’s finished within the top 10 at the opening race of the year

Andrew Short earned KTM a top 10 finish

James Stewart 61 career starts and 52 podium finishes

Chad Reed has 125 career starts and 110 career top-five finishes

Supercross Lites Class Stats: Phoenix

The first Supercross Lites class race in Phoenix was March 16 1991, and Jeff Emig won on a Yamaha.

This will be the 14th time the gate will drop for a Supercross Lites class race in Phoenix.

James Stewart is the only rider to earned Supercross Lites class wins in back-to-back seasons. He accomplished this in 2002 and 2003.

Josh Hansen earned the opening race win for Kawasaki. Hansen led a Kawasaki podium sweep along with Broc Tickle in second and Tyla Rattray in third

Kawasaki has now won a Supercross Lites class main event in nine consecutive years, which is the longest active win streak

Supercross Lites class rookies Ken Roczen and Eli Tomac earned seventh and 10th place finishes respectively

Rockstar Suzuki’s Martin Davalos finished fourth
