2009 BMW S1000RR | Motorcycle Production Begins

German Superbike.

It is not ready for the United States yet, but the all-new 2009 BMW S 1000 RR motorcycle, destined for World SuperBike, is rolling off the assembly line in Germany.

The superbike’s 999cc in-line 4-cylinder engine is very condensed and lightweight, according to BMW, and features a compact, narrow cylinder head. The RR’s valves are activated by small and very light cam followers-virtually at Formula 1 level in terms of their dimensions. BMW further claims that this construction ensures very high engine speeds and allows maximum freedom in engine design in terms of torque and output.

Other notable features on the S 1000 RR is BMW’s newly developed sports ABS, which offers four modes. Additionally, the bike is equipped with a dynamic traction control system. Both of these advanced features are results from BMW’s racing effort, which includes input from World SuperBike riders Troy Corser and Ruben Xaus. The team’s debut race will be at Phillip Island in Australia on March 1, 2009.

In Europe, the S 1000 RR will be available in the four finishes including Mineral Silver Metallic, Acid Green Metallic,  and Thunder Grey Metallic, plus Alpine White/Lupine Blue/Magma Red, which is based on the BMW Motorrad racing colors. The dry weight of the S 1000 RR is said to be 403 pounds.

Orders are currently being accepted and the bike is expected to hit German showrooms this summer.
