With pole-man Casey Stoner crashing on the warm-up lap the first corner shuffle saw Dani Pedrosa take the lead followed by Toni Elias, Rossi and Lorenzo, who quickly passed Rossi to re-take third. The first few laps were a mini battle between the Yamaha team-mates as Lorenzo fought to hold off Rossi and look for a way past Elias at the same time.
Valentino Rossi has had two victories at the Ricardo Tormo circuit, in 2003 on a Honda and in 2004 riding a Yamaha. Valencia is one of only four circuits on this year’s calendar where Rossi has not had a win riding the 800cc bike; the others are Losail, Donington and Phillip Island. His third place finish last year is his only podium at Valencia in the last three years.
Andrea Dovizioso had considerable success in the smaller classes at the Le Mans circuit, twice finishing on the podium in the 125cc class including a win in 2004 and also finishing on the podium three times in the 250cc class. Last year he finished 6th after dropping down to 14th early in the race after a clash with James Toseland.
Le Mans is one of Colin Edwards’ more successful circuits having twice finished on the podium – in 2005 and 2008; one of just two podium finishes he achieved last year.
