2011 AMA Motocross

Villopoto’s success this year makes for one of the sport’s greatest comebacks of all time. In 2010 while leading the AMA Supercross class points race, the Kawasaki rider suffered a horrific crash at St Louis that resulted in a broken tibia/fibula. Not only did he lose the championship, he was unable to walk for nearly five months.

From the looks of things, the 2011 AMA Supercross/Motocross year would be a struggle. But the California native made a quick comeback. After six wins, including the season-opener in Anaheim, Villopoto would go onto to take his first-ever AMA Supercross Championship.

Villopoto didn’t stop there, though, the 23-year old also taking the AMA Motocross Championship. But there was more. Villopoto piloted his Kawasaki KX450F to the top at the inaugural Monster Energy Cup at Sam Boyd Stadium, Las Vegas, in October.

His Monster Energy Cup win paid off huge, Villopoto taking the biggest purse in MX history – $1 million.

As Villopoto looks to defend his title at the upcoming 2012 AMA Supercross Championship that begins Jan. 7 in Anaheim, here’s a video recap of Villopoto’s performances throughout the 2011 AMA Motocross Championship.
