Dunlop has released the Geomax MX54, a new motocross tire built for intermediate-to-hard terrain that covers a wider variety of track surfaces than its predecessor. The MX54 succeeds the Geomax MX53. Dunlop says it grips better and lasts longer, and that it works for everyone from weekend amateurs to pro racers.
The tire is built to hold a predictable feel as a track dries out, from morning moisture to late-day hard-pack. To back that up, Dunlop gave it a new carcass design and rubber compound for better durability over long motos.
With the hard-terrain Geomax MX71 now discontinued, the MX54 fills that gap while still overlapping the soft-to-medium Geomax MX34. It joins the MX34 and the MX14 sand and mud tire in Dunlop’s Geomax motocross lineup.
The front MX54 gets an all-new tread pattern aimed at sharper turn-in, more cornering stability, and better braking, with a continuous center groove for braking grip on slick, hard-packed dirt. Revised block placement and stiffer knobs are meant to give more consistent feedback as a track breaks down.
The rear borrows its tread pattern from Dunlop’s Geomax Factory Spec race tire for more drive grip and slide control when on the gas. Dunlop reduced the number of rear blocks to create more continuous spacing between rows and made the blocks about 5 percent taller to improve traction and durability. The rear tires have shaped cornering knobs that bite harder as the bike leans, plus a varied knob layout for steadier grip.
Dunlop claims the MX54 is 1.64 seconds faster per lap than the MX53 on a Honda CRF450R at its proving grounds in Huntsville, Alabama.
“The MX54 represents the next step in our motocross tire evolution,” said Dunlop Director of Motorcycle Marketing & Motorsports Chad Geer. “We’ve taken everything we learned from the success of the MX53 and applied it to a tire that delivers more consistency, more control, and more confidence for today’s riders and racing conditions.”
“The new Dunlop Geomax MX54 features advancements that allow it to be much more versatile than MX53,” Dunlop Motorcycle Europe Marketing Manager Roberto Finetti said. “We have worked closely with top MXGP teams to deliver improved grip across all terrain for riders of all levels.”
The new Dunlop Geomax MX54 is available in six front sizes and 11 rear.
