2014 Dakar Rally | Yamaha’s Despres wins Stage 8

The 2014 Dakar Rally continued Monday with the stage 8, which took riders 430 miles from Uyuni, Bolivia, to Calama, Chile.

The stage featured 143-mile liaison and a challenging 287-mile special. But it was also the end of the second marathon stage, which meant riders had no help from mechanics until the day’s conclusion.

Though challenging, five-time Dakar winner Cyril Despres was unstoppable. The Red Bull Yamaha YZF 450 Rally pilot took the victory, which was his first of 2014 Dakar.

The Frenchman took the stage by over 2 minutes ahead of his rival and current overall leader, Red Bull KTM’s Marc Coma, who won stage 7. Finishing third in the stage only a few seconds behind Coma was Team HRC Honda’s Joan Barreda Bort, who won three stages so far this race.

With his win, Despres moved up a spot to ninth in the overall rankings, though he follows his rival by 2 hours 24 minutes 28 seconds. Barreda is closest to Coma, over 38 minutes behind. The next fastest rider is KTM’s Jordi Viladoms, who follows the three-time Dakar winner Coma by 1 hour 27 minutes 22 seconds.

Following is from the official Dakar Rally stage 8 report: “Even though the weather conditions prevented the bikes from crossing the salt pans of Uyuni as initially planned, there was no shortage of pizazz during the 499-km long eighth stage, firstly, with the return to the headlines of Cyril Despres.

“Third to start this morning, the title holder soon caught up with Marc Coma to ride together and gradually rein in Joan Barreda. Despite the Honda rider stepping on the gas at the end of the stage, at the finishing line it was the Frenchman who tasted triumph, 2’10 ahead of Barreda and 2’16 in front of Marc Coma. Behind them, whilst Portugal’s Helder Rodrigues and Frenchman Olivier Pain confirmed the good form of the Hondas and Yamahas with the day’s 4th and 5th places, the day was marked by the difficulties encountered by Sherco! 14’25 were lost by Juan Pedrero, but Alain Duclos again suffered misfortunes, this time a mechanical problem at the start of the stage, leading to a loss of almost 35 minutes.

“As a result, in the general standings, although the Franco-Malian is still fourth, he now trails Jordi Viladoms by 21’47 and is under serious threat from Jeremias Israel Esquerre in fifth place 2’56 behind the Sherco rider. In the lead positions, however, no change occurred. Marc Coma, well assisted today by Cyril Despres as an ideal pace-setter, continued to perfectly control his lead over Joan Barreda, which now stands at 38’08. The day’s winner, Cyril Despres moves up a place and is now ninth in the general standings, but trails the leader Coma by 2:23’58.”

Check out the stage-action action during the “Dakar Rally Series,” which will air on NBC Sports Network at 5 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 14.

2014 Dakar Rally Stage 8 Quotes:

Cyril Despres (Red Bull Yamaha YZF450 Rally) says: “I have to be honest and admit that I didn’t set out this morning to win the special, it was more a by-product of my determination to move up the overall rankings. I won’t deny though that I’m delighted with the result, both for myself and for Yamaha.

“Yesterday wasn’t easy, with an early start on the bivouac and rain on the liaison. Then at altitude I wasn’t 100 percent, with the thin air making it hard work on the bike.

“When we finally got to the bivouac in Bolivia myself and Mika took a long time to clean up the bikes and make sure they were up to today’s special, finishing at around ten in the evening. Then this morning we had more rain at the liaison, though fortunately the special was mainly dry. Tomorrow should be an interesting day riding to Iquique and there could be quite a lot of navigation. It won’t be easy opening the piste but I will continue to push.”

Joan Barreda Bort (Team HRC Honda CRF450 Rally) says: “I’m happy because today I opened the way all day without making the slightest mistake, which is the first time for me, so I’m really glad!”

Marc Coma (Red Bull KTM 450 Rally) says: “This marathon stage was complicated, especially due to the altitude. Today, it was very long, so I’m happy about how the stage went.”

2014 Dakar Rally: A Look at Stage 9 (Tuesday, Jan. 14):

Stage 9 will take riders 280 miles from Calama to Iquique in Chile (18-mile liaison, 262 mile-special).
