SunTrust Awards Support AMA Supersport

SunTrust Banks, Inc., supported a number of awards in this year’s exciting AMA Pro Road Racing series and none was more hotly contested than the SunTrust Improve Your Position Award that honored the AMA Pro SuperSport Young Gun rider who improved the most total positions in an event weekend.

A $500 check was presented to the winning rider at the following race during the Friday morning rider meetings.

The SuperSport Young Gun class is for riders 16 to 21 years of age and represents the future of the sport as an interesting mix of young riders battled all year long in the quest for the AMA Pro SuperSport Young Gun National Championship.

As the official bank of motorsports, SunTrust has long been a supporter of motorcycle racing, they also sponsor the SunTrust Solid Performer Award that honors the AMA Pro National Guard SuperBike, Daytona SportBike and SuperSport riders that lead the most laps in their respective classes during the season.

This year’s SuperSport season saw the emergence of a number of stars. Not only were there six different race winners in the East and West Young Gun divisions but history was made when Elena Myers won the SuperSport race at Infineon Raceway, making her the first female to win a professional AMA Pro Road Racing sprint race in the series’ 77 year history.

In the race for the SunTrust Improve Your Position Award, there were seven different winners with three riders wining the SunTrust Award twice.

At the season opening race at the famed Daytona International Speedway, Daniel Guevara took the SunTrust Award on his Suzuki. At the next two races, Eric Stump riding his Yamaha took the coveted SunTrust Award.

Stump took the spoils at round two at the Auto Club Speedway in California and then backed it up with his second Improve Your Position Award at Road Atlanta.

Not only did Elena Myers take a historic win at Sonoma Valley’s Infineon Raceway, she showed just how impressive her win was by claiming the SunTrust Award to boot. Riding her Lucas Oil RMR Suzuki, she improved a total of ten positions overall in the two races.

Daniel Guevara took his second SunTrust Award at the legendary Road America circuit in Wisconsin. Daniel improved a total of eleven positions in the course of both weekend races.

The next rider to put his name on one of the big SunTrust checks that were awarded to sincere applause at the early Friday morning riders meetings was New York state’s James Rispoli.

Rispoli guided his Suzuki to the SunTrust Award not only at Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course, but also at the next race at Laguna Seca during the big US MotoGP race weekend. James started eleventh and finished fifth in the single race Laguna Seca event. This accomplishment was a precursor to his overall win later in the season at Virginia International Raceway.

At that same VIR weekend, Ohio rider Ryan Kerr took his first SunTrust Award. Ryan overcame a low starting spot to improve a combined nineteen positions on his 614 Paintworx Kawasaki.

The youngest of the three Wyman brothers racing in AMA Pro this year, Cody Wyman took the SunTrust Award at the next race in New Jersey over the Labor Day weekend. Cody started 25th and wound up gaining 16 total positions on his Harv’s Harley-Davidson Suzuki to take the $500 SunTrust Improve Your Position Award.

At the exciting season finale in Alabama, Colombian Stefano Mesa won the final SunTrust Improve Your Position Award of the 2010 season.

Stefano improved an impressive 23 positions over the course of the two weekend races. He finished eighth and fifth after starting eighteenth on his Yamaha.
